I don't know if it's a 4K box but I have Kodi on my Amazon Fire. I only use Kodi for local media, so can't tell you how it performs for any streaming services I'm afraid. Installation was relatively straightforward. I found a howto and just followed it. Less hit and miss than rooting an ATV trying to get into debug mode.

I find the Fire TV excellent, much better UI than my ATV2 and nippier also, but then that's not surprising. Kodi plays back 1080 material pretty well which the ATV2 struggled with.

Streaming Fire based material has been fine. I have around 25Mb/s down and 5Mb/s up.

Ah thanks. From what I've read, the 4K box runs at twice the speed of the non 4K box and you can voice search via the remote control. Just ordered one off the 'bay with all sports and films etc. I have fibre broadband so around the same speed as you. Very Happy Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Having Googled a bit I see that there is a 2nd gen 4k model. Ours is first gen. Apparently the process for loading Kodi has changed slightly because Amazon have blocked some features, but the sideloading apps are very easy to use. It sounds like yours is coming preloaded though.

If I might ask, what does 'all sports and films' relate to?

Basically, all sports, pay per view events and movies and everything on Sky apparently. Adult films too if you ask but my wife would put a hammer through it if it came with any if that stuff loaded on it. Laughing

Brother in Law put me on to it. He has one and can do the programming stuff etc and told me to just buy the unit and he'll sort it for me. They are £79.99 everywhere (Argos, Tesco, Amazon etc.) but I'm getting this one already done and delivered for just £99 so for just £20 extra it wasn't worth the aggro and time of going out, getting one and running it 35 miles for him to install whatever he has to. Apparently it also auto updates.

We have all Apple stuff at home (iPod, iPad, iPhone) but he's into Android stuff and he says you can send the same programmes to a smart TV from most of their products - he showed me Sky sports on his phone. He might as well be talking Chinese to me but I know he mentioned that he uses 'Beast' build whatever T F that is but that's what the one I have ordered is coming with. We'll see. I'll let you know how it goes. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Well, it arrived. Plugged it in, switched on and.....not a lot! Kept either not connecting or playing for a minute and then freezing. Got on to the seller. He told me how to clear the cache and basically, it's been fine since. Very Happy

Of course, being internet based and running on wifi you get the odd channel that won't load but from what I've noticed so far, there's loads of different channels offering, say, Sky sports and if one doesn't work, you try another. Some channels offer half a dozen different links to a programme and you just try different links until you find one that works. Has all the Sky sport channels including F1 (which was my main reason for getting it), loads of latest films, boxed sets, live links to the space station etc. I've only just scratched the surface at the moment but I'm well pleased so far. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Had a firestick with Kodi for month or two. Use Exodus at the Montana it's brilliant. Follow Kodi on the net and you'll find which apps are the best.

Yep. Thumbs Up from me for Exodus. Even a Dumbo like me managed to get that loaded - fantastic films including some that are not even out yet. Very Happy Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

So..........Kodi is obviously legal as it's just an application sitting on the Firestick, but this Exodus thing - surely that's not legal. Is it?

Don't really know, but today I was watching the Man U v West Ham cup match which was being shown over here on one of the BT sport channels which I don't have. However, when watching it through my fire tv box, I was watching it direct from an American sports tv channel. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Streaming copyrighted material without the owners permission is not legal.
As you know every key press you have ever made whilst connected to the internet is recorded and logged.
Many people use VPN's and mask their IP to try and prevent detection.
Of course your ISP know exactly what is happening and will target the biggest users 1st.

Hmm - grey area at best I guess.....

Recent tests in the CJEU (Court of Justice of the EU) suggest that streaming utilises a loophole in the law regarding the words "temporary" and "transient" meaning it does not infringe copyright.

Downloading and storing, by comparison, does infringe copyright.

Not sure I follow the logic personally, which suggests this is indeed a loophole and not in the spirit of the legislation as written.

The UK Federation Against Copyright Theft said in a statement to the Daily Telegraph last year that their "strategy was not to prosecute end users, but to find, prosecute and shut down the sites hosting copyrighted material."

As I say - very grey, and not sure I'd want to test it in a UK court, even with that CJEU judgment in my back pocket.

I agree Choccymonster, It could be argued with examples found from international courts.
I also very much doubt they would prosecute someone who streams football at weekends or the odd movie.
They would go for the person who actually streams for profit and close down their servers (I think mostly Asian/African?)
The ISP's have all the ammo they need against us, if they decide to use at a future date. Shocked
