Just how often do you use a sat nav?

Perhaps it's because I spent my whole working life driving around 30k miles/year before sat nav became common and now I am retired and hardly ever need one (and I can always use my iPhone) I was thinking the other day that you only really need sat nav if you are going to strange places and thus unless you are something like a delivery driver or continually visiting new clients then how useful are they?
I spent the latter part of my working life working for a small company and we had no end of calls from people who were lost trying to find us or had been directed into the same traffic jam as everyone else rather than follow our instruction on the quickest way to find us. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I am the same, can pretty much get around the UK within a mile of where I need to be without Sat Nav, however, even if I know where I am going I sometimes program the route, it makes it easier to get round any jams and the ETA gives me a good idea if I need to ring ahead if late. The voice guidance is turned off, I just watch the screen.
I find it quite comical, on motorways, especially in the morning, you see the same cars day in day out with a massive sat nav stuck in the middle of the screen on their way to work, can they not remember?

Use it on holidays on the continent, but it is pretty useless if not using autoroutes, some very odd routes come up when avoiding toll roads, always have a cheap Garmin on hand, pain in the neck trying to find an address or POI more than 100km away. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Yep, what Taz said about sums it up for me.

It does help when going somewhere new - especially if travelling on your own or passenger is not the best map reader.

Wouldn't want to be without a nav on my motorbike though!

At least once a week.
I need to find a particular address, I could use an A to Z, but it's easier to stick it in the sat nag, though I will often argue with her when she sends me round the Wrekin.

I also use it on longer journeys that I know & try to beat ETA SD4 HSE Lux Orkney Grey,Full size spare tyre,Ugly kid glass.

I was once given the task of getting a postcode for a company that had just been established on a green field site. I ended up talking to someone in an office in Edinburgh who actually creates new ones. When it was done they warned that it could take several years before all of the various sat nav databases caught up with it but don't worry about your post as the post man doesn't use them anyway. As they said on The Royale Family, sat navs are really clever, how does it know where youre going when you didnt know until this morning Rolling with laughter

I just use it really if im going to a destination ive never been to before to get a rough idea on the miles and time it will take given no hold ups.

I couldn't tick a box. Never had one.

Use a map when needed. Last holiday in Italy & other parts of Europe for 4 months I used a couple of maps. They worked perfectly ok. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I use one mostly for holidays or going some where I have not been before, also to tell me where the speed cameras are, as the signs are not always prominent for the speed on that road. Freelander 2 TD4 GS 2011 Manual Satorini Black (Current)

Well, what would you expect from me!!

I do use them as a Post Code look-up, then look at a map and drive there. This compensates for the use by my girlfriend who needs satnav even to get her car out of the garage! Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

I like to have it purely to keep track of location, and sometimes I enter destinations for longer journeys on the off-chance it get's the traffic right, but all the actual navigating is done the conventional way and the sound stays off. Thumbs Up Freelander 2 2007 TD4 Manual HSE Tambora Flame

Use mine all the time. Thumbs Up
I use it for the speedo reading - always look at the Sat Nav and seldom look at the speedo.
GPS is near accurate whilst the speedo is not!

edited to add: can you add 'every few minutes' to the poll Wink FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Of course there is the other thing that the older you are the more likely you know a better route. As an example between Basingstoke and Winchester there is the old A30 which runs alongside the M3 and is partly dual carriageway but hardly anyone uses now it as the sat navs take them down the often congested M3. I suspect that a lot of people these days haven't a clue where they are and don't carry a map anyway. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
