Because for those who are capable of navigating well, there's no substitute for a proper map. Smile

Of course there is the other thing that the older you are the more likely you know a better route. As an example between Basingstoke and Winchester there is the old A30 which runs alongside the M3 and is partly dual carriageway but hardly anyone uses now it as the sat navs take them down the often congested M3. I suspect that a lot of people these days haven't a clue where they are and don't carry a map anyway.

Don't have one dont need one - got shouted down on here for espousing such heresy. Shocked

Whilst having a grump - what is it about folk having to charge around the towns and supermarkets with 1/2 litre of coffee in their hand. The new filo fax methinks to tell the world how busy they are Sad and why do folk reverse into supermarket bays then struggle to get to the boot with a weeks shopping. Rolling Eyes MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

I always switch mine on - it's nice to have a map to hand for various reasons, and it's much safer than trying to read an actual map on the move. I set the destination if I'm feeling lazy, but often I only use that for the last few miles to find somewhere I've not been before. The only times it's really invaluable - trying to find a pre-booked hotel somewhere you don't know, especially abroad, or looking for a local hotel if you haven't booked anywhere - again very helpful abroad. I've found a couple of really nice b&bs in Germany, where most places tend not to have a web presence. I also find the rolling map can be a useful warning of bends and junctions coming up. Here in the fens many roads are straight with rightangled bends, often with no warning signs, so a glance at the map can give you good advance information - a bit like a rally co-driver. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

We use ours regularly, mainly just with the map on screen. However, it is invaluable when trying to locate village halls after dark down narrow country lanes (we play indoor bowls in our local league). We've not lived in Cornwall for long and so quite frequently find ourselves going somewhere for the first time. Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

I remember driving round and around trying to find a street or road and funny I only said to the wife, how the hell did we get anywhere without satnav.

Instead of the circular search once in the area its usually a direct route. But it can be bloody annoying in city centres and one way systems.

In Leeds it had a dicky fit and took me through no through roads and streets Smile

That's the problem when they start mucking roads around. In Bradford mine told me to take a right turn at a no-right-turn junction, then took me through a buses-only street (I thought I must be going to a building on the street, but no - it was the other end and on a bit). The one I like most is the road to Holy Island - the satnav shows a nice road across the sea, oblivious to the fact that it's closed for eight hours a day at high tide. There are people who would rather believe the Satnav than their own eyes. http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-...ts-6375510 Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

I use my TomTom for nearly every journey. I know where I'm going but I don't know where there are any traffic problems. Tomtom alerts me to problems and reroutes me as necessary. On the way it also advises me of speed cameras etc.

I have a sat nav built into the car but rarely use it. There are sat navs and then there are tomtoms.

Every year there is a big event held nearby called "Camp Bestival" , a bit like a mini Glastonbury for families and the police put signs up everywhere asking people to ignore their sat navs and follow their signs. A lot of people either can't read or just ignore them and they end up in the same traffic jam. Laughing 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

This is so true! I've known people to end up in the other end if the country following the sat nav as they've out something in slightly wrong , not realised & just followed it regardless, all because they done no route planning, they had no idea where they were !

I think the whole thing is simply down to awareness. In my experience, I have an above average knowledge of British geography - others just don't and won't have a clue where their navigation system is trying to route them. On the few occasions that I enter a destination, it has often been on maybe slightly unusual routes that I choose because of knowledge of shortcuts/traffic/roadworks etc.; often it will try to reroute elsewhere but this is normally entirely expected on my part, and continue to ignore it...as I do anyway. I don't think I could get genuinely lost if I tried - having grown up among the local forests, it seems it's not in my nature. Confused Freelander 2 2007 TD4 Manual HSE Tambora Flame
