Remember in the old days where we would undo the caps and pour out the acid then let the crap settle out. Next wash out the cells with deionised water and pour out more then put the acid back in? Generally the at the bottom was shorting out the plates so even though you lost some battery capacity it kept it going for a year or two or until you sold the car. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

You just have to be careful when mixing acid with water or water with acid, get it the wrong way around and it can blow up in your face |

Whilst you should always take care with acid/water issues the reality is that it only really matters when adding water to concentrated sulphuric acid. The reaction is exothermic and causes local boiling hence the "explosion" (of bubbles) if you do it the other way around (or use dilute sulphuric) the water absorbs the heat more effectively and although it still heats up it doesn't have the same spectacular effect. This is why it's possible to top up your battery acid with distilled water without taking special precautions.
