Tomtom sat nav

Just fitted a Tomtom 6100. Fitted where the cubby hole used to be. Comes on when ignition turned on and goes off when you turn ignition off. Took ignition live from back of cigarette lighter socket in centre consol. Run cable to back of glove box and wired in another cigarette socket. This way you can unplug the Tomtom usb lead and plug into a laptop to update the sat nav. £250 for the sat nav. £3.99 for cigarette socket. £1.99 for inline fuse, just to be safe. Well pleased with the result and saved a fortune from the retro fit units on the market. The Tomtom 6100 has free map updates for life and free traffic for life.
The photo of behind the glove box is not great. But hopefully you can make out the cigarette lighter socket and the inline fuse for added protection. The bar with the holes in is what I used to secure the sat nav to the facia.

Hi Stevie, how did you secure your Tom Tom in the cubby hole? Did you remove the dash and fix it from behind some how? An pics available to show us.

When I did mine (TomTom Start 60) I removed the fascia and used Sikaflex (sp?) to stick it in. Hasn't budged. The other thing I did which you may want to consider is getting a spare fascia panel (was £20 on eBay) so you keep your original pristine for when you sell on..

There's a lot of helpful stuff (if you plough through it!) at http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic12741.html?highlight=satnav
In particular, it's easier to take the power off a piggy back fuse in the fuse box under the glove box rather than the cigar lighter. I fitted mine with double sided tape, others have gone for more robust fittings but I didn't find that necessary. Note that this mod can't be done on post MY13 models, as there's no cubby hole. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

Don't forget to keep a map in the car too. I live in a coastal village and I am forever being stopped by people saying "can you tell me where is the beach? (answer keep heading downhill - beaches are never uphill)
Or the other one - "we just put a postcode in to the sat nav this morning so where are we exactly? " 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto
Now Discovery Sport P250 MHEV SE

I used double sided tape to fix in place just to make sure it was nice and straight. I then used aluminium straps that had holes in and fixed the straps to the holes where the cubbyhole used to be fixed to. There are no extra holes made or damage to trims, sat nav etc so if I sell the car or want to put it back as before its a simple job with no holes or marks left anywhere. To be honest I was worried about tampering with the trim etc, however now having finished the job it was quite easy and really pleased with the result. It fits nice and tight in the cubbyhole and looks a professional job if I do say so myself and I am quite fussy. I will take some pictures on Sunday and post. Cheers. Steve.
