My Freelander 2 March 2007 07 plate currently on 104,245 miles

Mine has been virtually trouble free apart from the usual wear and tear items tyres and servicing until it got to around 82,000 miles had to have 3 out of the four door locking units replaced.
86,000 one of the key fob batteries failed £230 for new fob and programming by land rover.
87,000 miles rear knocking and grinding noise at junctions when turning right or left right worse, turned out to be low haldex oil. Flushed and replaced with new oil.
88500 Duel mass fly wheel failure in narrow one way street Embarassed Caused chaos until I got it recovered by the rac he had to reverse 2 miles down the wrong way of the one way street.
90,000 miles £800 spent on brakes 2 new rear callipers , rear disks , handbrake adjusters worn , front brake disks and pads.
94,000 miles knocking suspension caused by seized rear shock absorber. whilst it was stripped down I replaced all four shock absorbers due to being too soft and replaced all four springs and spring seats as were badly worn.
96,000 miles air conditioning stopped working due to a leak in the filter plug on the bottom of the condenser £18.00 plus £30,00 recharge.
96,500 rear tail gate release switch seized replaced with a new one.
96,700 miles service including Cam belt and auxiliary belt as slipping
99,200 miles starter button broke no ignition replaced switch £22.00.
99,500 miles Non start in cold weather due to failed Glow plugs plus Bosch battery replacement 096 substituted to 110 bosch battery giving a better cold start as higher cranking amps.
104,000 miles radio illuminating display started to flicker as failing back light still flickering now might replace the premium unit very soon.

Forgot to add my front Passenger side wheel arch has rust all around the lip where the rubber trim goes this is due to water ingress inside of the paint might be to do with road salt corrosion. There is also a few odd spots of rust forming around the welds of the bonnet slam panel.

Bought (privately) March 2010 with 24,000 on the clock
1. 42,000 Rear wiper motor replaced - warranty
2. 68,000 Air Con Comptressor replaced - bearing siezed (INDY)
3. 72,000 Front Discs and Pads replaced (INDY)
4. 81,000 Pulse wire controlling Air Con rad fan broke - replaced (INDY)
5. 85,000 I added second battery earth wire

I think I have a minute leak somewhere on the Air Con system which means it has to be regassed every year! No one can find it though.

Other than usual wiper blades, odd bulbs and tyres (usually get 45,000 miles on rears and 32,000 on fronts) Betty has been trouble free. Always serviced by local INDY

I have the usual uneven wear on outside of rear tyres, especially nearside, which results in a drumming sound when tyre gets to 4mm but disappears once tyre replaced - like others I at first thought this was the rear diff going!

We tow a caravan to Europe each year and winter ski trips to the Alps.

I hope to keep it for several more years as she runs like a dream and is SOO comfortable. I know there will be a large bill down the road for Cam Belt change, possibly Clutch and Diff but those costs of £4000 ish are nothing compared to the £17,000 + that it would take to replace with another 2-3 year old vehichle. Tattoos - Why would you choose to look like the wall of a public toilet?

I have a MY2011 with 50000 miles on at the minute, not really missed a beat..

I also have a FL1 MY2004 with 213000 miles and still going strong taking me from Derby to Birmingham everyday clocking 500 miles a week.


all its ever had is a clutch master Cyl, a clutch Slave cyl and an IRD not long after buying it..

apart from that its just cost me in tyres and brakes.

I do all the servicing myself, doesnt need a cam belt change as it has a chain..

Great car, Ill have it until it dies and even then I'll see if its worth repairing..

Hope I have the same luck with the FL2!! MY2011 Freelander 2 GS Santorini Black

Hi, May be quite a bit less. Clutch, bearing and DMF replaced recently for £818. Quote from same INDY for timing belt, tensioner and water pump £380. Bell engineering in Worcester do an exchange diff (including larger bearing) fitted by appointment for £680. Even more reason to keep her.

I plan to keep mine for at least another 50,000. Can't think of anything I would change to just now.

Hi, hope the FL2 stays reliable.

I had a MY2000 petrol FL1. Company car and managed to do 40,000 miles up and down the M4 in six months....and it didn't grenade. Really liked it but would have preferred a diesel. Have you had any problems with the viscous coupling drying out?

Hi Olegit, this must be about as old an FR2 as you can get, and a petrol as well.

How long have you owned it? What sort of history does it have? Mileage, faults etc.

I posted on here, thinking there may be other freel2 users who have prepro / press-launch cars.
Typical registrations were VX56 D-- and VX56 E--.
There were also a few with B prefix, I know of BG56 N-- and BG56 U--
Pre-production cars were supposed to all have been crushed, but one or two slipped the net.
A lot of the press-launch fleet (November 2006, Morocco, said to be 100 cars) have also gone off the DVLA database.
But there are certainly a handful still around, somewhere.

So far, I don't know of a surviving car with earlier registration date.
70,000 miles now, I've owned it almost three years.
Quite a bit of sorting-out and proactive maintenance needed doing, previous owner had it serviced too cheap - all now fixed.
I bought it specifically because it's a pre-production car with good history.
Googling 'Fifth Gear Freelander 2' should bring up a YouTube clip of it, on test at Forest-in-Teesdale school. The quick brown fox

There is a bloke living not far from me who has an R reg Mercedes estate. It lives outside and he does the occasional job on it like brake pads, oil changes etc. I was talking to him the other day and he said it had just got through it's MOT at 180k with no advisories and he has never had any big jobs done on it. His previous Merc Estate had done over 240k when he sold it as it was starting to rust a bit but mechanically it was fine and a local builder used it for a couple of years until he ran it into a tree.

Amazing that a modern LR has problems with basic stuff like rear diffs, steering racks and wheel bearings when 20 year old cars seem to go on forever. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I am thinking the same. After 8 years and 86,000 miles she still runs like a dream, is very comfortable and tows effortlessly. For what it would cost a month to replace, you can do a lot of repairs and at present the Freelander does everything I need from a car, very well, so see little point in changing. Remember there are never problems, just new challenges

The Freelander 2 was always a good car, despite some niggles, but the last ones were certainly nicest ...

I was hoping some freel2 users might have, or know of, other early F2's previously owned by Land Rover.
There were certainly some still around, last time I checked DVLA.
As well as cars made in the run-up to 2006 launch ...
Freelander 2's on the company's demo. fleet (probably also registered VX) would be changed regularly.
Then there'd have been early-version cars for the two facelifts, some of which would have been magazine-featured.
Or maybe there isn't any interest in Freelander 2's history? The quick brown fox
