Largest spare wheel?

Apologies for making this new post from an ongoing conversation about fitting larger wheels and tyres.

I've recently fitted a set of Evoque alloys 18" with 255/60/18 tyres, arguably the largest that will fit without rubbing. That in itself was some feat and a bit of a leap of faith and help from members!

That left me with a tiny 16" spare which worried me a bit. A bit of eBay bargaining netted me a fifth Evoque alloy for £20 and a 235/65/18 tyre to fit to it.

I went for the smaller width tyre because I had heard that any wider than that and the boot cover would not fit flush and leave the floor sticking up into the air. By fitting this skinnier tire but with the same rolling circumference I have managed to fit it to the 18" original alloy wheel and close the boot floor Flush.

Does anyone else know of any larger spare wheel being carried in the boot of the frelander 2

?

EY - you have said you now have fitted 255/60/18 tyres on Evoque 18's and your spare is 235/64/18 also on and Evoque 18'' wheel.

surely the rolling circumference will be different as your fitted 4 tyres are 60 profile and your spare is a 65 profile ??

as you say the 255 / 235 tyre width wont make too much of a difference when used as an emergency spare, only if fitted for longer distances.

well the 60/65 is a percentage of the width.

so 60& of 255 = 153 and...
then 66% of 235 =152.75!

That way I was able to fit the same rolling circumferance tyre in the spare wheel hole without the "Width" pushing up the boot floor - a problem another member had reported when fitting his spare with the wider 255 tyre...

It took a bit of working out an various tyre calc websites and I asked the question on here too - It was avoided like the plague lol but One leap of faith later and it's all done and fits great.

Before putting the spare in the boot I offered it up to the fitted wheels and it looks an exact match - the only visible difference would be to view it from the front or back (across it's width) then its exactly 2cm skinnier - un-noticable really on a moving vehicle. Also as it's the spare - it would only ever be used in an emergency anyway...

This is the 255/60/18 it mirrors

even after all the calculations - I didn't believe it until I saw them next to each other!

THEN... dropping it into the spare hole was nerve-wracking to see if it actually fit! It's pretty snug but fits fine!

I just searched eBay for Evoque alloys and found a bloke wanting a starting bid of £25 but no one had bid yet, he happily took £20 paid immediately to make space in his garage! Just lucky I suppose. The tyre was a belter with 6mm left, no repairs or punctures nor scrapes and only £5.00!

Speaking of space in the garage Westville, do you still want rid of the used steps?

Interesting, thinking of going the same way.

I wonder if a new 235/65R18 tyre will fit in the spare wheel bay ?

May have to try that first.

Do your 255/60R18 tyres not rub at all ?

There's always the option of storing an oversized wheel/tyre (in radius) by semi deflating the tyre and using a compressor to pump up if/when required to be used.
Bit of a faff though, especially on a dark, wet n windy evening on the M1.

I've just got my std 17" as a spare, not ideal when running a set of 20's with 285/50 Tyres.
But my view is it'll get me to safety where I can have the puncture repaired/tyre replaced. FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Brodit active iPhone holder + Brodit dash clip,
Bluetooth Music Streaming Module.

A few years ago a friend of mine's wife was visiting someone out in the wilds in a disco and on her way home felt that the car was doing strange things and saw that she had a flat tyre so she drove home about 15 miles on it! By the time she got home the tyre was almost non existent and the alloy wheel was completely wrecked. He was not a happy bunny ! 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Hi there there is no rubbing with those size tires at!

The only spare wheel you can fit though is that 235, any larger than that and the width pushes up the boot floor, so by getting the 235 but with a bigger radius the rolling circumference stays the same as with the 255 but allows the spare to fit flush Into the spare wheel well in the boot.

Not true!
I have a full set of 5 17" GS alloys fitted with Cooper AT3 in 255/65/17 and the spare fits perfectly in the boot.
I even have room for my recovery strops and shackles, heavy duty jump leads, compressor and other bits that fit around the spare in the wheel well and the boot floor sits perfectly flat Very Happy

Sorry, your wrong there. I had a spare 20" in my boot with a 245 45 20" tyres and the boot floor cover sits perfectly flat.

My question is why have you fitted 255's to the car when the correct width is 235. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

255s probably have a deeper wall so lift the car off the ground more for extra ground clearance?
