Thule 2(+1) for me. I forget the model number but it folds down for boot access. Very solid, and been very happy with it.

I used to roof carry when I had a saloon car, which was quite practical but always concerned about height restrictions and did act as a bit of a sail. Also meant roof rails and carriers were permanently fitted as it was too much hassle to refit each time which adds noise and reduces mpg.

I've had a couple of racks that the bikes hang on and wasn't happy with either. My current rack is a 2 plus 1 style from the roof box company but it's a bit older than those shown here. The bikes sit on it firmly and there is no movement once they are strapped down.
As for the comment about being rear ended, the tow bar wrote off our 206sw when the wife was rear ended by a focus.

I need to start looking for a solution that suits the Freelander and my FF as both cars have stalk type tow bars

Do the towbar ones work on the detachable towbar?

Just to confirm, my Thule rack is used with a detachable towbar, although I am wondering now why I opted for detachable since I leave it on all the time now.
