"Mine has become slow to turn over in the morning and had one HDC Fault message."

make sure the battery is fully charged and stop starts works. If stop start is reluctant to work there is a good chance the battery is poor.

I drove 320 miles the other day and stop start didnt work all day. Put battery on charge overnight with a GYS charger designed for stop/start systems as battery requires a different voltage charge rate to normal batteries ! and now stop start system works ok.

Slow to turn over & HDC fault is a fairly good indicator of a low battery. Jaguar x-type sport gone

Thanks. I don't recall stop start (eco mode) working in a long time so could indeed be that.

Will check it out, although tricky as the car is parked on the street all the time. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues
2019 DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…

Update, albeit a few years later . . . .

The extra engine earth lead I put in place and wrote about a few years back have behaved themselves faultlessly, and I have never seen the HDC faults appear since.

The other day, I started to notice another starting problem. I would press the START button, and it seemed as though there was a slightly longer time delay before the motor kicked in. Probably less than a second, but enough for me to notice that there was some hesitancy there. Engine would always start without fail, but I started to listen carefully and noticed that it was indeed a little hesitant. It sounded like the first quarter turn of the starter was very slow, and then it would burst into life, almost as though the battery was flat.

The Battery was good and fully charged, and being a bit smug about my previous repair, I knew that the earth fault was well and truly fixed, which meant that my starter motor was probably on its way out. These things do happen, and they do wear out. I thought I would have a close look to see what sort of job changing it would be, and made a bit of a startling discovery.

The positive lead from the battery attaches to the starter motor on the top, via a big 13mm nut, and mine looked a little discoloured. With battery disconnected, I thought I would take a closer look. Although you can just about see the nut with a torch, you are best to remove the air box so you can get your elbow in there with a spanner. Removal of the corroded nut showed that the electrical connectivity had been so poor that every time the joint had sparked, it had resulted in a lump forming on the side where it was trying to effectively weld itself to the cable.

The ring terminal on the supply cable was just as corroded, but after a few minutes with a bit of emery paper, everything was bright and shiney once more. A new nut and washer attached, and I have never heard the starter motor turn so fast. A nice and simple 10 minute fix, and a quick bit of preventative maintenance for anyone reading here.

Anyone who plays with car electrics, (myself included), will always look for an earth fault when something goes wrong, as in 99.9% of the time, that`s what it will be. Just don`t overlook the live side of things, as they can also be problematic too.

Good point Dave DND. Some positive thinking there Wink

I have just made up and earth lead to fit today.

Will take a look at the starter connections while I'm in there.

Cheers, JGH 99.

Thanks for the info, fitted an earth lead today and found that the starter is far more responsive, confident the HDC fault showing will be a thing of the past.

Yes, thanks to all on this post. First coldish start this morning. O degrees fired up nicely first press after a 1 second halt for plugs. No hdc fault.

I did also have the crank sensor out and give it a clean. Will never know if this helped or not. Worth doing though as fairly easy to do.

Cheers, JGH99.

Just had the starter solenoid contacts and plunger sorted on my 07 freelander. One of the contacts was only working on a very small part and the copper ring on the plunger was very badly pitted.

Hi Tank24, I'm thinking my starter may well be in a similar condition. Mine is an early 2007 with 98,000 on the clock. Did you have starter repaired or exchanged? What sort of cost?

Cheers JGH99

hi JGH i got a kit and my local garage sorted it. Its fairly easy to do yourself if you have the time and place, the repairkit cost about £15 and they charged me £50 to do the work, as opposed to around £200 or more for a new starter.

Thanks tank24 will take a look.

Can I ask where you bought your repair kit?

There are a few suppliers around but a recommended one would be good.

Cheers, JGH99.

For £13.50 and couple of hours I'll try the repair

Thanks again, JGH99.
