If you had a FL2 XS 2009 and fancied a new car, what would you buy?

A bewer FL2 with the updated dash so about 2 year old or an Evoque. You never do any silly off roading, just snow and forest tracks

£25k will get you a full spec HSE Lux with around 20k miles, decent LR warranty etc, Evoque interior is very nice, the whole package, for me, wasn't as practical so the HSE Lux FL2 was my choice and I am glad I did, its a cracking spec on it, everything you need, and being the SD4 engine gives you that bit more than the TD4 you have been used to

Would def get an older D4 for that money, no question! FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Brodit active iPhone holder + Brodit dash clip,
Bluetooth Music Streaming Module.

FL2, Evoque, D4 all very capable on snow and tracks. I would imagine the Evoque to be quite a firm road off road, the FL2 quite supple and smooth but both may occasionally scrape the ridges. The D4 will just glide over all over that in total comfort.

All depends on what you need the car for, (boot space, economy, comfort, etc)

Personally I would look at the newest FL2 I could get or a high spec (but slightly older) Evoque, as the D4, although a dream car for me, is just too big and thirsty.

If I had the money I would get a Discovery Sport but thats also not a choice

Same dilemma - had an evoque courtesy car for the day a bit ago - very nice to drive but just like a car, not an old style LR. You sit low, it feels low, can't see the bonnet ends, I found it hard to place in tight spots and narrow tracks. A big sigh when I got back in the FL - part glad, part disappointed with the evoque, it wasn't a big step change up, just a step sideways in a way I don't want to go. D3/D4 - yes, awesome (I had one of the first D3's, an HSE) and so capable - but big & very dear to run out of warranty if you have to use your own taxed cash. Oh yes, the (3 month old)evoque had all the familiar squeaks & rattles - but oh so dainty - that we all love.
I want pan roof, electric seats with armrests over my SD XS but that's not really worth another £5 - £8k.
So - go FL HSE/Lux/Metropolis is my vote FL2 Ex D2, D3, RRS, etc. now all gone.

If fashion and image are your priorities and a harsh ride, compact dimensions and limited visibility don't phase you then the Evoque is for you.
Late model Fl2 are a great package and frankly after having couple Evoques and a DS, the Freelander 2's
build quality is amazing. Even switch gear is better. MY15

Freelander has more space for rear seat passengers, more boot space and a far superior driving position than the Evoque. It's also much better looking and altogether classier.

Discovery Sport is cramped in the back and feels poorly finished compared to the FL2.

You'll get more for your money on the Fl2 but the Evoque, especially Dynamic spec, is a great drive on country roads and muddy tracks. The low seating position got me.

I've owned all 3 Fl2, Evoque and DS and pains me to say it but I would go Evoque. It's good fun to drive, yeh it's a bit harsh but not uncomfortable.

I had the same dilemma when deciding to change my FL2 although I had up to £25K plus my 2008 FL2 HSE. I just couldn't spend up to another £25K on the same car as what I already had that was no longer in production. I plumped for a 2012 Dynamic Lux Evoque with 20K on the clock from a main dealer for just under £34K and I'm well pleased with it. Okay, it's a tad smaller than the FL2 but we didn't need the space. The ride and handling, even on 20" wheels, is superb and not in anyway harsh. In Dynamic mode, its like driving a go-kart around the lanes - no noticeable body roll at all. I don't know what model/year/mileage Evoque you'd get for £25K though as they seem to command a premium price.

FWIW, I had a small electrical problem with it a while ago and we were given a brand new Disco Sport HSE to use for 5 days while they were waiting for parts and it was 'orrible! Very plasticky inside and not a patch on our Evoque but in the DS, the HSE is about the mid-range model. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Just as a guide Pentland Edinburgh has a white 61 reg Evoque Dynamic coupe Si4 for £23,500 or a few 12 reg Pure Techs for £25k 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

The dog would be unhappy with such a low roof line and I don't mean the OH, can the Ewok bring back 250 litres of wine plus luggage from France? just has to be the FL2 my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Let's face it, if you went on the Dacia Duster forum and asked the question "If you have a chunk of money, would you rather have a newer Dacia Duster or a Freelander 2 Metropolis" the majority of the answers would be for the Dacia Duster!

I suppose the best way to get an honest answer to such a question is not by asking on any particular forum as to which is the best of the two (FL2 or Evoque) but to actually look to see what people have done. Just look at how many ex Freelander 2 owners are now on the Evoque owners forum, and how many ex Evoque owners are now on Freel2.com.

I'm an ex owner. Went from Fl2 to Evoque then back again, I liked the Evoque but I was limited to taking one dog out at a time so traded it in while prices were high and LR was offering £2k deposit contributions on new Fl2s. If I didn't have the dogs I would've perhaps stuck with the Evoque but would've ended up back in a Disco at some point anyway.

If you want a car that's a bit of on the road fun with reasonable off road ability then go for Evoque but if you want classic styling, good off road ability, practicality and a bit more bang for your buck then Fl2. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200
