I think I meant 'Gatling' but having Googled it, that seems even older. Laughing

On reflection an EMP device would be most suitable Whistle

LEDs will be easily much brighter than halogens, but, two things to consider - 1, fog lights don't need to be, and shouldn't be, hugely bright, and 2, the higher colour temperature of LEDs gives more glare and they offer poorer colour rendering - not good in poor weather conditions. Just worth considering, but I realise most fogs are used primarily as a fashion accessory more than anything. Thumbs Up

Just to clarify ...

Led will easily be much brighter ... nonsense, it will need to be a higher lumen output LED to be brighter, only then will the statement stand up, not all LED's are brighter.

I didn't say all LEDs would be; I meant that with the high luminous efficacy of LEDs, it is fairly safe to assume that any decent quality LED unit designed for use as fog lights (as per Mikey's Osram units) is highly likely to be a bit brighter to make it saleable. Wink

Colour temperature has nothing to do with glare, poor beam profile causes glare and colour rendering depends on the make up of the wavelengths within the spectrum of the light produced, LED's can have a very high colour rendering index.

Colour temperature does affect what we perceive as "glare" due to way the human eye processes light and psycological effects. Lights at higher colour temperatures have been shown to be more glaring than lower colour temperatures - the effect of one's own headlights will be more significant in inclement weather. It's for these reasons that selective yellow headlights do work (not, due to Rayleigh scattering as has been wrongly asserted in the past). A warmer light is also inclined to encourage the eye to lean towards photopic vision vs mesopic/scotopic due to the wavelength sensitivity of the rods and cones in our eyes. Wink

Some LEDs can indeed have a very high CRI, but most white LEDs and the sorts typically used do not by comparison with halogen. It's a more minor point anyway and my emphasis was intended on the colour temperature more so. You do make a vaild point though; I am generalising a lot here. My statements are based more on the typical sorts of products currently available rather than the overall capabilities of LEDs. I would cetainly like to see manufacturers looking to make related improvements on an LED system. Thumbs Up

Having said all that, you are correct they are a fashion accessory, I would much rather replace mine with something more useful, something like a bren gun to shoot out the rear fog lights ofthose who dont know how to use them Laughing

On a certain online site there is a LED direct units swap for the existing halogen unit and its not that expensive. Plug and play also, plugs into existing LR wiring plug.
Otherwise wouldn't be surprised if the LED units in the V40 or XC90 volvo would be a direct fit, just a thought Thumbs Up

There ya go!

"Styling" only though - it's clear to look at them that there's no vertical beam cutoff, so they will shine light straight up at the fog in front and ruin any hope of clearer vision. Thumbs Up Freelander 2 2007 TD4 Manual HSE Tambora Flame
