Can water affect kick-down?

I was driving home tonight and the water was lashing down like it was the end of the world.

Unfortunately, on a country road near my house, where there were no street lights, I hit a patch of water which I didn't see, at about 45-50mph. It was deep and I aquaplaned.

Water went everywhere, and must have been sprayed up into the roof of the engine bay as there was water sitting in the bolt-hole depressions for the plastic engine cover.

BUT, I've now got kick-down issues. If I accelerate hard, it jerks two or three times, quite violently, and then goes into gear. If I accelerate slowly, the jerk is still there, but hardly noticeable.

Can anyone assist with a possible cause? Surely water can't have got into the gearbox. Could I have damaged how the kick-down facility works?

Fingers crossed it's not a big repair bill... Big Cry

Thank you.

I hope it's just a wet filter, and hopefully the drive to work tomorrow might dry it out with air being sucked through for an hour or so...time will tell Confused

There's been quite a few posts about soaked air filter elements lately affecting engine performance. You should really replace it or take it out and dry it out thoroughly. Can't say I've noticed any rain though. Rolling Eyes Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I've just gotten into work and apart from one jerky first kick down, it seems to have sorted itself out, which makes me think there was some water in the air filter. I will swap it out, just to be safe, but the more I thought about it in bed last night, the more I thought it must be the air filter which got wet. I checked under the bonnet this morning, and there was muddy residue all over the engine bay, including the air box.

So, thanks to both of you for quick advice, and I will continue to keep fingers crossed nothing further happens. Thumbs Up

I have 2 k & n washable air filters which I swap over if the one I am using gets wet. I then was and dry the other until I have to swap it again.

Good idea, but £110 plus for two air filters (even if they are K&N) is a bit steep for me!! Shocked
