If it is loader under acceleration (whining) and the noise drops of when just rolling its the "Diff pinon bearing" The torque puts side load on the pinion bearing thus if it on the way out it makes a noise.
This bearing can be replaced, if sorted before the bearing gives in and trashes the complete Diff unit.

If the noise is there all the time and slightly loaded when corning its the wheel bearing. " The corning courses more side load thus make more noise.
The wheel bearing are the same as the early FL1, but you will need to press to replace them.

I noticed my fl2 getting noisier than normal. Seems to drone above 25MPH and noise comes from the back. It's done about 42000 miles so far of which 12000 miles from my driving since last April. Getting 3rd service tomorrow by Team Valley and I have asked them to investigate it.
Couple days ago as I put on reverse gear, one of the sensor has gone faulty, beeping straight away even though there wasn't any thing at the back. It was raining then and the fault remained after several stop-starts. Next morning it stopped and hasn't come back since.

Thats what our one sounded like, turned out to be a rear diff low level bearing repair needed, massive difference, now very quiet....however it may be bearings or even tyre noise if the thread is well down...Im not a mechanic by any means and these are the few things I was led to believe it may be, with regards the sensor if a bit of muck or a water droplet sits on the sensor it will cause it to go off, we had this a few years ago and it was a little bit of muck lodged around the sensor, popped it out and give it a good clean, no bother since, howevwer if a parking sensor they are reasonably easy to replace and not very expensive on ebay.Regards Regards

The tyres are quite new,4x pirelli scorpion verde fitted last April.
Brought car to service today, let's wait to see if they can find out.

I purchased my car from a local dealer and their workshop is not a LR specialist, I would like to be sure the 'drone' is not tyre noise before I take it back.
Is it possible that tyre noise or resonance, such as expected for example with winter tyres, could after some time induce a vibration in the transmission system leading to early bearing failures?
I would not want to put up with tyre noise (my general purpose tyres with heavy duty treads are nearly new) if continued driving was causing harm.

My FL2 has been noisy from the rear ever since I bought it nearly two years ago.
The tyres were 17" Goodyear Wranglers & the rears were right on the limit.
I had a set of 18" HSE rims with a decent set of Goodyear Wranglers on that I fitted & the noise did not alter.
I changed the o/s rear wheel bearing because it sounded like that was where the noise was coming from, made absolutely no difference!
Last week I finally replaced the Goodyear Wranglers & the droning noise from the rear has now gone!
Great result  (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

Well before my used car warranty expires I will try to borrow a set of wheels (for a test drive) with tyres that are known to be quiet.
