If it is the diff get on to Land Rover customer service for a big contribution towards the cost for repair as they know it's a common fault, in my opinion Land Rover are well over due to recall all LR2's to sort out this issue Twisted Evil

I only ever had one diff actually fail. It was quite spectacular though.

Not quite a diff failure but an AA man once told me how, years ago, he was called out to a car that had stopped on the Motorway. About 1/4 mile before he got to the car he noticed a prop shaft lying on the hard shoulder. The driver of the car said that he had driven with quite a lot of vibration for some miles and it was getting worse and that suddenly the vibration stopped and the car cruised to a halt but with the engine running and in gear. It turned out that the rear hardy spicer joint had got completely screwed up and came apart and the prop shaft then neatly slid out of the gearbox on its splines. The driver was convinced that his clutch had failed! 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Spoke with Ryan at Landrover, very nice guy he is arranging a visit for our freelander to Pentland in Edinburgh for some diagnostics, we will see what comes of that! Regards

Just out of interest what was the mileage on your FL2 and did it have a tow-bar? As there are varying reports on high/low mileage vehicles with diffs going petetong Rolling Eyes

Mine had approx 51k no tow bar and was fully serviced and at best had only seen a grassy verge ...... Can anyone beat the mileage before the dreaded diff drone set in? - not a servey just a bit of fun and happy New Year Shocked

Wheel bearing is a hum, where diff is a whine. Hopefully tyres, keep us updated.

Can you describe the difference between these 2 sounds?
Is humming noise has lower frequency then whining noise?
Thanks

Difficult to describe but you are correct that a hum from a wheel bearing is a lower frequency.

My MY2009 auto with 44k miles has what I would call a slight 'resonance' type vibration between approx 60 and 70 mph, I think it is in both 5th and 6th gear but difficult to tell.
Have only had the car for 2 months, it had new mid range tyres fitted by selling dealer and am hoping it is tyres not transmission, any comments would be appreciated.

I had the rear diff drone fixed and within a 500 miles the noise came back but this time it was a wheel bearing. Then after another 20k the noise came back again and the dealer initially thought it was the same wheel bearing but eventually tracked it down to noisy tyres. To me they all sounded the same. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

In addition to my previous posts I also had the transfer box replaced. It's a pity that the LandRover is all about the 4 wheel drive system and this seems to be the weakest part of the car! 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Hi Longdave, my diff issues (noise) became apparent around 30 mph and upwards, if your drone is more in the 50 to 60 mph region then I would first look at the tyres as there are many reports of Worn tyres or dear I say it the less expensive tyres being used on a vehicle such as the FL2...... Thumbs Up

From what I can see from other more informed members the general tread depth needs to be minimum 4mm, I changed mine at that point and it did make a difference, albeit the diff had already started to go! Big Cry

Just noticed that you say you've only had it a short time, assume you have a warranty, if so take it back and explained the symptoms! Don't leave it to long otherwise you may miss out on getting it fixed at no cost Thumbs Up
