Alright...alright

Must say though, I've never owned a car where both bulbs go at once. Think I'll swap the freelander for a Trabant!!

As I've written elsewhere, my local indy (not a LR specialist mind you) says that he would only fit Genuine LR bulbs. He's tried aftermarket ones and they don't last. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

LR do not make bulbs Laughing from factory the HB3 bulbs that LR fit are made by Philips. Night breaker bulbs are far superior in light output but do not last as long as they burn at a much hotter temperature hence they are much brighter. I don't know why a lot of people bad mouth them as it clearly states so on the packaging Rolling Eyes

I'm running Bosch Pure light. They don't claim to be lighter or brighter, but the beam pattern is good, as per original. I previously fitted Halfords Extreme Brilliance +90%, but found the beam pattern rubbish. It may be something to do with the bulb anomaly and black splodge shown here. I don't recall it being like that when I fitted it. I wore gloves and avoided touching the glass.

Sorted!!

It was something really complicated and extremely specialised Wink Embarassed Embarassed

Desperate to find HB3 bulbs in my small Welsh town, but ended up with HB4's. These were adapted with the help of a head torch, soldering iron (bladed) and a fair bit of fiddling. Not as bright as I'd like, but they'll do for spares once I get some good HB3's.

Cheers for the help / sarcasm people.

Ash

Just had the same thing on our car. Wife came home from work on Christmas Eve bemoaning lack of dip beams, she drove 100 miles on sidelights and fogs.
Great thinks I , another complicated electronic problem that will probably never go away( see schizophrenic locking, screen turning off etc)thought I'd check here in case it's a known fault and saw this thread.....
Just off to Euro's for a pair of £15 Osram Nightbreakers as the spare headlight bulb is an old one ,from when I changed them as a pair 2 years ago.
Nearly feel as daft as I did Googling how to check the oil level on my Merc( use the dipstick, dipstick!) In my defence a previous E Class didn't have one. 2007 Freelander 2 2.2TD4 HSE manual (Hers)
2010 BMW 530D Estate (Mine)
2001 Mercedes CLK convertible (Hers)
That doesn't seem fair, time to find a 300Tdi
Range Rover for me !

At least I helped someone!

I was just thinking of expensive repair bills and ridiculous labour costs.

New nightbreakers ordered.

Oooooosssshhh

Hi GSDM.
My lights are like the photo.
Drivers side full beam won’t work. Passenger side fine.
Bulb is new.
Don’t understand how to get a high beam - as you say, only one filament in bulb?
What do you mean by shutter adjustment - never heard of that?
Thanks,
Steve

Seems we have the choice of fitting standard bulbs and not being able to see for a year or fitting Nightbreakers and being able to see for 6 months. It's getting like fitting winter tyres.

Steve, sorry for the long wait on a response, I no longer have the Fl2, driving a DS now and very pleased with it. I don’t frequent this forum as much now.
The lights don’t have a separate filament to provide the high beam, but just have a cover that drops in place to shield off part of the light output that would be dazzling on coming drivers. It’s not adjustable by the user.

Some people have had issues with bulbs shattering and jamming the mechanism, is this something you’ve had? If you turn he lights on and have somebody switch between high and low beam can you hear the shutters moving. I’ve just tried it on the DS and it’s quite noticeable. Obviously without looking into the beam.

Gav.

LEDs

Just installed these units -
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07G6WLN...&psc=1
LEDs - brighter, hopefully more robust & thus less prone to failure.....

Already fitted in my GMC for the last winter and sofar so good - so for the price ($30) thought I'd give 'em a try in the LR2....

If the fail prematurely I'll post on this thread.
