The irony is, if you had a lighter car, you could tow a heavier caravan yet still be within 3,500 kg. Only thing is, you would not have such a safe combination as you get with a 4x4! Don't go there!

Back to your problem, there may well be some basic caravans at 1,000 kg but your choice will be severely limited. Remember, the caravan weight you are looking for is the max laden weight (MTPLM), not the empty weight (MIRO)

thanks for the advice, I will have a look round.

I dont mind doing the test in the end if we find we like the whole caravan thing as although driving for 15 years ive never towed a trailer or caravan. Towed a few cars in the snow but thats about it. 2010 HSE SD4 in Santorini black

That you were looking at is a old a.b.I caravan its the same model as the one I am repairing for my daughter its weigh's in at 1000g fully loaded and is a four berth can't remember the name of it right now but they were aa entry level caravan back in the 1980's so most likely will have a fridge that works on gas and 12 v supply that only works when pluged nto the tow car 12s socket , hopefully
some one will have added a mains 240 hook up kit if not all the lights etc will run off a caravan battery ,as for damp problems if you can do basic wood work any repairs are simple to carry out just takes time the hard"St part been resealing the awning rails that run around both sides of the caravan and are one of the main suspects when dealing with damp .

Why not hire one for a weekend and see how it goes.

If you do buy a second hand van, the only way to stop damp is when it is in winter store (and summer if possible) is to have a low wattage electric thermostatically controlled convector heater on to stop condensation.
I have been caravanning for 35+ years (Sorry CG) and over that time have had 5 vans, none of which has ever had damp in
it, and my present van is a 10 year old Swift Challenger which has just been resealed over the front windows as a preventative measure.

If you live anywhere near The Wirral send me a PM me and you will be welcome to have a look at my van and see what you can get in a 10 year old van, for reasonable money.Mine is only a 2 berth but the principle is the same.

I run a dehumidifier in my van on low for an hour a day on a timer, Never had a damp problem. I do have to empty the water container every few weeks. I have had a van for 40 years or so.

Perhaps a day visit to someone who is holidaying in a modern caravan might help convince her . . . ? Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!
