tyres, diff or wheel bearings??

HI all,
Quick few questions if I may, excuess me as not very technical.

We have a whinning noise coming from the back of our freelander 2 (2011) XS with 47000 miles, generally only at higher speeds over 50mph, not really loud but kind of constant, doesnt change much cornering etc....but does decrease at lower speeds. apon looking at different threads on here the above in the title column seem to come up often. The tyres are Pirelli Scorpions 18", I think there is around 2.5 to 3mm or so on the back and 3.5mm on the front, I have ordered a new set of tyres anyway went for Goodyear Wrangler HP's (mainly becoause we had these on our last few and they were good)????. If not the tyres how can I tell if its the wheel bearings or the diff? It recently went through its MOT so thought it may have been flagged up at that point if bearings??
Any help greatly appreciated. Regards
J Jenkinson

Wheel bearing is a hum, where diff is a whine. Hopefully tyres, keep us updated.

Thanks
I have a 2 year warranty from Arnold Clark, if the purchase was anything to go by I dont fancy my chances with the warranty (unfortunatly to late to cancel afterwards) when we bought it a year ago it was meant to have been serviced along with a number of other issues, our indepedent local garage (we have used for years) told us the air filter and fuel filter hadnt been changed for a while!!! we only took it in as the oil service light had came on and Arnold Clark Peugeot in Edinburgh wouldnt even return our calls to sort this. so hoping it is tyres as dont really want to have to go through this mob again....warning beware of Arnold Clark as sharks and now looking at the warranty our 2nd service within 3 months of buying it to get it serviced right seemingly voids the warranty as not carried out by an Autocare garage!!! Regards

If it is the diff, am I right in saying I can contact Landrover and they will contribute to the repair if I cant get it through the warranty I have?? Regards

As above, although on my bmw a wheel bearing didn't sound massively different to tyres nearing the end of their useful life.

You've got the tyres ordered so hopefully that'll be it.

i had 18 inch scorpions, and had a slight wine at the rear, and a rotational thud almost like going over a small speed bump which despite lots of investigation i couldn't identify the cause, tyres were getting down to the last few mm so have just changed them for wranglers, all noises gone

Parts needed for diff replacement

Apparently my diff is going out. I have been advised that I need to replace the diff and the coupling. In most of the threads that I have been following generally there is plenty about replacing the diff but this coupling thing is new. Is the coupling the Haldex or is it something else. Going from the quote from the dealer it is twice as expensive. The parts names are differential and CAR; Coupling - Drive SHA. Can someone help me understand what the quote is about.

put your head in the boot of the car while someone drives, it obvious if its the diff as the nopise comes from the centre of the floor and echoes around the boot area. 47k on a 2011 if prime time for the diffs nose bearing to go. Bell Engineering sell recon units with upsized nose bearings

I have a drumming noise that gets audible above 50mph. It's not loud but you can hear it with the radio turned off. I had the noise when I had Goodyear Wrangler tyres, they was about 3mm when I changed them to GG AT's. The noise went for about a month then retuned. Same noise, drumming type noise above 50 mph. 20000 miles later and the noise is still there, It hasn't got any worse. Garage reckons it's the shoulders of the tyres making the noise. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

In my experience tyre noise changes with the road surface. Mechanical noise may change from drive to overrun, but the road surface makes no difference. Personally I've never worried about diff whine - it was pretty standard in the older vans and rwd cars I've owned, and I only ever had one diff actually fail. It was quite spectacular though. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

Had the same symptoms on my 2007 with 51k was indeed the dreaded rear diff but if you catch it early then only diff repair kit required and LR contributed 30% of the cost - result Thumbs Up

Ah but the one that failed was a Bedford (CA)! Stripped the planet gears. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
