England 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Santorini Black

quite interesting poll results so far.

66% would go for facelift models pretty much split evenly between TD4 and SD4

17% would go for pre facelift TD4, so cars that are no 6+ years old and prone to age related failures
17% would go for early facelift SD4 so cars that seem to be prone to several issues that LR are unwilling/unable to fix

If/when I was going to come back to the FL2 fold, then the results so far have sort of surprised me, as my leaning was towards an SD4 Auto 2012> and yet a fair few prefer the TD4 2010>

I think personally I would definitely go for an auto next time round, but based on results thus far, Im not sure if it would be the lower powered chugger TD4 or the higher powered, smoother SD4 Confused Confused

The earlier TD4 has a number of advantages over the later one - an extra 10hp, no DPF, and an EGR which can be blanked with a simple plate. So if you want a manual the earlier TD4 could make sense.

I recently came back to the fold after a year away and my previous two FL2s were TD4 manuals (at the time I bought my last one the SD4 didn't exist). However, I've now got a MY14 SD4 and I find it quieter, faster and more expconomical than the TD4s. Auto box is pretty good and very smooth.

FL2 with SD4, manual box and low range (plus maybe an extra inch of ground clearance and better reliability) would be very close to my perfect car. Pity it'll never happen...

SD4 for me. I've had it in auto on my Fl2 and manual on my DS. But now loving my powerhouse Disco SDV6 256hp 1 up on my last D4. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Stornoway Grey

OK, I'll try to be as unbiased as possible.

I had a TD4 160 Manual for 6 1/2 years and loved it. Could not fault it, she drove well and had plenty of torque for what I needed.

I have now had the SD4 Auto for just over 2 years beleive it or not, and it is for sure the better machine. The Auto box suits the Freelander so much better that the Manual and of course the power and torque is more than enough to make very good Progress solo or towing.

But........I recently drove a 2013MY TD4 Auto 150 and again I was very impressed. Although the Peak torque figure is the same as the SD4, the SD4 torque Comes in lower and for longer so the identical Peak torque figure doesnt tell the whole Picture.

The extra power of the SD4 makes all the difference.

But would I go back to a Manual Freelander? No, not for a second. This is not to say the Manual is bad because it isnt, but for me the Auto is leagues ahead. Especially when towing.

With all that said, the Si4 is a serious machine. I have driven one about 18 months ago and got really annoyed that LR didnt Launch it here. They missed a trick! Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

I have an SD4 Auto and love it find it decent on fuel tbh for what the car is also would say there is plenty of power and the auto box for me suits it well. Also find it great for towing. Regards

so looking at the poll results and peoples comments IF I were to go for another FL2 then avoid early TD4 (of which ive already 2) and avoid early SD4 (the ones with all the hesitation problems)

which leaves gen 2 TD4 or newer SD4..................

Newer SD4 would be out of my price range unless they had rocket ship miles, which comes down to 2010 > TD4 and it would have to be an auto for me this time

so a 2010 > TD4 Auto high spec model is top of the list at the moment.................. anyone selling one like this cheap ? Rolling with laughter

2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Santorini Black

Ive just bought a 2011 SD4 Auto having previously had a 2007 TD4 Manual.

There is absolutely no way I could now go back to a manual TD4. The car is so much quieter, the engine doesnt rattle at higher revs like the TD4 did. Its obviously much quicker but feels alot more responsive as well. All in all its just a much better car to drive, its so relaxing. As for MPG I'll sit on the fence at the moment, havent had it long enough but it is looking like its a bit lower. 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE
