United Kingdom 2012 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Santorini Black
steering alignment

Hi all,
I've just bought a Freelander HSE Auto (2013 spec). It is fitted with 4 x brand new Pirelli Scorpion Zero tyres, all to correct pressure. 4-wheel alignment has been done and all measurements are in the "green" zone. Problem is, the car pulls to the right and requires constant correction to keep it in a straight line; appears very sensitive to the camber of the road.
Any thoughts on a fix?
Thanks,
Gavin

Interesting.

Mine pulls to left. Also had 4 wheel llignment done. Just had service and mot and asked them to check for worn bushes but no problems found. Andy

Brake binding? OR

Depending on how good the person doing the tracking is can mean its set up so its all in the green so to speak but the steering mechanism isnt centralised as they did most of the steering adjustments on one side only instead of an equal amount each side?a good indication they have done this is the steering wheel isnt dead level when driving in the straight ahead position but slight out of horizontal of you see what I mean?

OR
one or more suspension components have had a thump at some time, easy to do on a off road car, and this can put the camber/caster angles out, also this wont show up on a tracking only set up only on a full comprehensive suspension alignment check which can take a great deal longer to complete than a quick track check?

My brother in law had this on his secondhand FL2 and after having the tracking set up twice and it being no better it was found eventually it was due to a fault with one front strut, when once replaced solved the problem

The wheel allignment I had done was the full monty, camber/caster everything. All was in green when finished.

Still pulling to left. Andy

Thanks chaps; I think I will have a specialist check both suspension and wheel alignment and see if that improves matters. Its a shame really, as the car is actually quite enjoyable to drive otherwise, even if the engine is a bit gruff!

If its pulling one way or the other then its not been set correctly otherwise it wouldnt pull, providing its not due to the brakes or worn tyres.
Has the car ever been involved in an accident?
Does the steering self centre ok once youve completed a turn?

Car is a Land Rover Approved Used, bought from main dealer. who assures me never involved in an accident.

Steering wheel seems to centre around 3 minutes past 12, if that makes sense?

I have a very similar thing on my 08 SE, which I just bought about 2 months ago. But I found out that if I drive on "horizontally and vertically" straight (flat) road, everything is fine. Once the camber of the road starts to change, the car starts to pull to either side. Can anyone relate?

if a car does not drive in a straight line on a flat surface having had the alignment set, and tyre pressures and tyre wear checked, then there must be a mechanical issue, there can be no other explanation.

Question is, what?.
Start looking at the easy / cheap to fix first - Brakes binding.
If its under warranty return it, demonstrate the fault, take your loaner, and dont pick up your car until issue resolved Smile

My first FL2 didnt drive in a straight line, it had a loose component not identified during tracking etc, the dealer kept the car until this was located and resolved.
Since then all my FL2's, and the many loners all drive straight

I remember years ago having a Morris Marina that would never drive in a straight line despite doing all the tracking etc. I eventually decided that the the lower suspension joints were worn so I decided to do both sides and took both items to the dealers to get new parts. It was at the part shop counter that I noticed that the two items were actually slightly different to the extent that it would make the steering geometry different on each side! As the car wasn't that old (but well out of warranty) we decided that it had probably been built that way! Another triumph for British engineering in the 70's ! 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

So, an update:

Took the Freelander to local wheel alignment specialists, who know what they are doing. After another full 4 wheel alignment, they discovered that the fault was actually in the steering wheel alignment. "Touch wood", they appear to have fixed the car, which is now much easier to drive in a straight line.

Would recommend:

Glad you had problem solved. Just thought this is worth mentioning as a common cause of steering pull.
A tyre can cause this, very seldom with top brand tyres but it can happen. Simple elimination is to swap front wheels left to right and car will now pull other way.
If its with new tyres take them back. All FL2's (3) Gone

Thanks for that - should the problem recur, that's exactly what I'll do!
