Intermittent starting fault,just clicks

I know this has been brought up a number of times on this site and others but has there ever been a fix found for this? I've had my freelander for about 1 1/2yrs now and the starting problems began 2 months into this. It comes and goes, the longest it did it was for a month and the longest it has taken me to start it 20mins, but it always starts eventually.
I've had two months problem free, even started on first press after being left for a week. Yesterday it finally refused, just the usual click every time I press the start button. Over the course of the day I tried starting it five times for 20mins but to no avail, even did the battery disconnect as seen on the forums. Tried jumping it this morning in case battery low but nothing. Sitting here waiting for green flag to turn up.

Has anyone that's had this problem - which appears to be common - found a fix?

Any feed back very much appreciated

I had this problem, I use to tap the starter motor and it would work. Took it to a mate who service the starter motor and it fine after that. MY13 HSE LUX Aintree Green

I was at a garage once where someone had this issue on a car that wouldn't start after filling up with fuel. The owner said that it did this occasionally so the mechanic came out and had a look at it then went and got a metal rod about two feet long and a lump hammer he put one end of the rod on the starter and gave the other end a wallop with the hammer and it started straight away. Sounds like the stater motor as said, the other option to free it is rock the car in first gear. Might be tricky with a FL2 though!

I used to work with a colleague back in the 80's who had a Renault with a sticking starter, he did the same, each night when going home down in the office car park he used to open the bonnet and give the starter a wack with his hammer then off he'd go.
I often used to see folk watching him in amazement and wondered if their car ever failed to start for whatever reason they would be there hitting the engine with a hammer, thinking well it worked for him. Rolling with laughter

I once lived in a flat and one morning noticed a guy down the street trying to start his Ford Cortina. He opened the bonnet and clearly hadn't a clue but he did undo the radiator cap and then went indoors and came out with a kettle of water and topped up the radiator. He took the kettle back indoors, came out and closed the bonnet and the car started first time. My guess is that he had flooded it and it just needed time for the petrol to evaporate out of the carb but from the proud look on his face he thought he had cured the problem. Sound very much like the starter motor I used to get the same with a Hillman Hunter which had a pre engaged link to the flywheel which used to click as the gear was pushed forward to engage by the starter motor. I use to use hammer to free it which worked for a while until it failed all together. Big Cry Freelander 2 TD4 GS 2011 Manual Satorini Black (Current)

Thanks for all the feed back,it was the starter motor,he said it may be fine for two months again but will need replacing.
I'm annoyed I didn't try walloping it like he did,had it been my Morris minor way back I would have done! Just don't go near modern cars,I have a friend at work that's a mechanic and he does everything, plus think I fell victim to google and decided it was an electronic problem.
The battery was flat too as I'd spent most of Sunday trying to start it, combination of him hitting it freed the motor which then clicked three times and dimmed the instrument dial prompting him to boost battery which enough to get it going.

Again thanks for all replies

It sounds very much like the starter motor solenoid contacts are giving up.

As cqr says Repairkituk do a beefed up set of contacts.

The Nippon Denso starter has weedy solenoid contacts which fail.Apparently same fitted to Landcruiser with same result)
Failure of the starter itself ,I am told hardly ever happens it is always just these copper contacts.

I replaced mine in Oct 2014 been absolutely fine since ( see my post Oct 2014 for detail)

The kit cost about £16 came with excellent instructions and is very easy to do( 2-3 minutes)
The only tedious bit I found was getting the starter on and off the vehicle as I found access not that easy but I am sure many others will find it a doddle.

Worth a try for such a littel outlay

At the risk of sounding like a preaching old 'elf and safety fusspot or of telling grandma how to suck eggs-
don't forget to disconnect the battery before doing this job. A short from the pos lead to earthing to the body or engine would be unwelcome.
Over the yearsI have seen 2 folk with nasty burns from battery shorts -one from accidentally shorting a battery with a spanner (it blew away part of the spanner) and a nasty circumferential burn of a guy's wrist where he shorted a tractor battery somehow with a spanner and his metal strap of his wrist watch.

Sorry, Here endeth the lesson...
