2010 LR2 HSE, Humming noise , what to do ?

Hi there

i have bought a 2010 LR2 HSE ( Freelander 2 ) and it almost done 120000 KM ( 75000 Mile ) and i start to notice a rear humming noise and when i try to search the internet about the causing of it i realise it ma be connected to a major common issue with most of the LR2 from 2007 until 2011 that related to the haldex/diff ,

My concern now is that i need to know shall i keep the car for the next 5 years and fix any issue that may appear in these coming years or shall i sell it and look for another used car with my budget ?1 i am confused now and need an advice from a mechanic who knows about this common issue Confused

Where is the humming coming from?

It may be a wheel bearing causing that noise... so jack the car up, look for "play" on any of the wheels before jumping in and thinking it's haldex/diff.

Alternatively, get a reputable indie to check it out. My Ride: Clickety-click

Could also be worn tyres. A good mechanic once told me to check the obvious/cheapest things first then move onto the more serious bits if the problem still persists. Let us know how you get on.

I was convinced I had a worn differential bearing and/or worn wheel bearings. However, when I changed the worn rear tyres (Goodyear wranglers) the hum disappeared completely. I was astonished as I was convinced the hum was mechanical. - 2007(57) XS Auto, Rimini Red, Alpaca Leather.

When you have MT tyres, you start to differentiate between the different types of 'hums'... Laughing Laughing Laughing My Ride: Clickety-click

Your car is a 2010 and done 75000 miles, classic for a diff pinion bearing, mine was the same, if its humming and it is the diff bearing you will soon know, its goes from a slight hum to a whine to quite a lot of whine inside 300 miles.
If it stays more or less the same over the next few hundred miles its probably tyres or wheel bearing??

Thank you all for the help , when i looked i found that the back tires need to be replaced , but the humming sound i feel it is under the back seats.

My real concert started when i look at this topic (( http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic20145.html ))

The vehicles concerned by the rear differential issues have their VIN between : 000212 - 257090 and Model Year 2007-2011

Check the links below. I hope that this will help second hand buyers; Try to avoid the vehicles having their VIN's between these numbers

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/freelande...003-5.html

Cheers

and my car VIN is between these VIN's , so is it so critical thing that i have to sell the car ? or i can keep it for the next 5 years or for the next 115K Mile ( today ODOMETER reading is 75K mile , and in the next 5 years will be 115K+75K=190K mile )

because now days there is an offer to trade my car in a used cars dealer in my home for another SUV , so i am thinking shall i keep it, there is no big issues or high price maintenance cost in the next 5 years for my LR2 , or shall i go for the trade offer.

i love my LR2 so much but i am scared from the rear differential issues and i dont know is it expensive to fix it or not Neutral Neutral Neutral Neutral

As a tempory measure, swap front and rear tyres. If it is the tyres there will be a change in the noise, you will then have your answer. If not put them back where they were and move onto next easiest problem solving method. Make sure you return the tyres to original axles regardless.
You'd be amazed at the noise a tyre with irregular wear can generate. MY15

The rear diff/pinion bearing is a quite common fault. Just had mine replaced on my wife's 08 freelander 2 which has covered 87,000 miles. Usually costs around £600. Ouch!! £600 for a defective £30 bearing. It seems that we pay for Land Rovers mistakes. Regarding possible future issues. In my experience with the Freelander 2, covering 20,000 miles over a 3 year period. Its been quite expensive to repair, with quite a few faults. Not including wear & tear items, such as brake pads & discs. I've replaced the battery, wheel bearing hub, fuel anti shudder cut off motor, now rear diff repair. Landy has now gone.

Hi al3jeel,

I'm happy that my post helped you. When you will repair the differential bearing, they will change them for an improved type. So you will not have to worry and replace them few years after. It is well explained in the technical bulletin in my gallery.

But beware, when they will replace the bearings they have to check something with the haldex or upgrade the software. Because there is an impact from the defective bearings on the haldex box and if not repaired precisely as in LR technical bulletin you may have to replace the haldex in a few months.

Read all my other posts on this subject and you will understand.

Have just had this repair done at just under 55K on the clock. As far as I know, parts have been replaced like for like, so I'll start saving to pay for this again in another 5 years!

1 x LR023441 BEARING PINION REAR DIFF F/L2 £25.96
1 X LR023442 SEAL REAR DIFF FREELANDER 2 £12.22
2 X LR023440 OIL SEAL REAR DRIVESHAFT F/L2 £7.10
1 X LR023443 SPACER REAR DIFF FREELANDER 2 £2.46
1 X LR002888 O RING REAR DIFF FL2 £8.36
1 X LR030846 O RING REAR DIFF CASE FREELANDER 2 £4.70
1 X LR050541 NUT REAR DIFF FREELANDER 2 £7.19
2 X FY116056 NUT £1.62
2 X CDU1534L HUB NUT (STAKE NUT) £5.90
4 X FY114056 NUT-HEX £7.84
1 X LR003156 GEAR OIL 1 LITRE FINAL DRIVE EPX 80W/90 £19.37
3 X LR054941 STATOIL SL01-301HALDEXCOUPLING 300ML £61.20
1 X LABOUR £247.50
VAT £82.27
TOTAL £493.69

It was a quiet whistling/humming noise to start with, bit like wind blowing round the corner of your house, got higher pitched with speed and was slightly louder when accelerating. Had got gradually noisier over the last month since I first noticed it. Performance was unaffected. I normally ask for old parts back just out of curiosity to see what the failure looks like but forgot to on this occasion. The Specialist I took it to in Leeds, have had plenty of experience carrying out this repair and knew instantly what the defect was on initial test drive, so it's clearly a common problem (mine's a 2010 HSE Td4e)
