United Kingdom 2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e GS Manual Biscay Blue

I first noticed it just after it was out of warranty and saw the many threads from others saying the dealers pushed back and blamed driving style, so i just put up with it as i did not want to pay for a new clutch only to have it go again in another 25k miles. Now its another 2 years and 20k miles later and i just live with it.

Romania 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Tambora Flame

In the latest months I've played a little bit with Freelander's engine maps (EDC16 variants) using WinOLS.

For the automatic gearbox the final torque limitation is sent to the ECU from the TCM (Transmission Control Module) module.

For the manual gearbox an additional torque limiter exist as follow:

- gears R, N and 1 max. torque is 270 Nm
- gears 2, 3, 4, 5 max. torque is 380 Nm
- gear 6 max. torque is 1000 Nm (this peak will never be touched due to other limiters)

- when trailer is connected max torque is limited to 500Nm

So if my maps description is correct, I repeat "if", then with the trailer, manual gearbox should be capable to endure 500Nm of torque.

Fix the clutch with what, the same spec components that can't handle the peak torque in 5th or 6th? Or have JLR up rated the clutch in the spare parts department and i am not aware of it?

Hi! Two years ago I replaced the original clutch including DMF with this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FREELANDER-2-2-T...OC:US:3160

I think the rest of the kit was LUK too, but I am a little unsure about that. (cannot find the link at the moment.)

The car is at 451Nm and 196Hp and there is no slip in 5 and 6 gear. (Measured on a really hot summer day on a Sun 4x rolling road)
The original clutch started to slip as soon as I got pass 160Hp

Im currently looking at possibly having to replace my DMF, clutch and slave on my 2008MY GS Manual, 65k on the clock, last 20k on motorway/dual carriagway.

No idea how the previous 2 owners drove it !!

Thanks for that link. It did make me smile when i read the warranty terms of 5 years or 50 miles ! Glad to hear you have had at least 2 years from it. It does seem that it is a good contender for when i get around to replacing mine.

Found the rest of the order. It was from Famous Four.

No problem with this.

Thanks for the info. I am assuming that the 500nm limit is applying to 6th only as it is already limited to lower figures in the lower gears. BMW X3 30d M Sport - Current (problem free)
2014 SD4 Auto HSE Lux - Gone (too many problems)

Hmm... can't say for sure. Question is, when the trailer is connected what are the gears with altered figure of 500 Nm ? I doubt you'll need it in the 6th gear.

With the mention that in the manual gearbox case, the engine ECU doesn't know for sure on which gear you are, except for the 1st and reverse where are switches for that. Exactly for torque limiting purposes.
Indeed, you can monitor load, road speed and engine RPM to "compute" the gear, but is not always a reliable method.

Loss of starting torque

After reading, on another Post, that some fuel filler caps don`t vent properly ( my cap had an inrush of air when removed) I replaced the cap and now the problem of poor take off has been solved. Not the ECU programing but fuel stavation.
Thank you Freelander2.com

All manufacturers do this on manual diesels. My last Audi did, which was shockingly bad and needed a new box anyway.

Vauxhall , Ford, and the VAG group do this. It is not a design after thought. It is down to modern diesels developing so much torque. So the limiting torque is for two reasons, gearbox protection and also traction. If torque wasn't limited then traction would be terrible. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Both needing gearbox's? I'd look at your driving style.

We have now 6 Freelander 2's in the family, and all but one has been faultless. The problem car needed a new rear diff, and Haldex unit, but it is on 176000 miles, so you could argue that this is acceptable. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. All this talk of failing clutches etc had me worried for a moment. Then I remembered the number of people that pull alongside me on the steep hills in and around Hastings and never use their hand brake. Some balance their car on the clutch for ages waiting for the lights to change. It's no suprise to me that so many clutches wear out under 60K miles. Whistle
ADVICE:- never buy a car from a hilly area.

Thats because some folk havent the slightest clue how a car works, if they did they wouldnt do half the things they do.

Or, as one person remarked to me......"I'm hopeless at hill starts". Laughing
