Have earlier diff issues not been with the pinion bearing? Not many diffs have been replaced afaik

Yes pinion bearing is too small. Some where rebuilt some replaced with new units. Rebuilt and replaced units are failing now as the bearing just isn't up to the job. This effects all cars up to 2013 eventually. The Haldex 4 change in 2009 actually made the failure even worse. 07-08 cars with Halden 3 seem to last around 70k. 09-12 with the Haldex 4s seem to last about 30-40k. If an 10 plate fails at around 80 you find the diff has usually been rebuilt once already.

So are the last Freelanders made, the 2014 and 15 models supposedly ok now or are we playing a waiting game too on those do you know??

Not had a post 2013 diff in so I don't know.

I must be one of the lucky ones as my diff is still ok at 98,684 miles

Will be buying a newer late model freelander very soon if the Mrs doesn't make me buy the new Volvo xc90.

Oh and i have some 2014 diffs, they have exactly the same bearings so will suffer the same issue at sometime in the cars lifespan

If the bearings are still the same size, are they replacing them with a better grade, bearings normally come in 3 grades where the better grade have better fit and closer tolerances for more silent running and longivity?
Bit silly if they keep replacing the failed ones with identical ones to fail again isnt it, especially so where theyve supposedly undated the whole unit to the next mark too?

The bearings will keep continue to fail if the Q106 service action was not applied at a proper time, or at least at the rebuilt time...

Although it seems that addresses the automatic gearbox software - and they will say that has nothing to do with the diff bearings, not to mention the manual cars -, during this service action, the Haldex software is also silently updated in order to reduce the direct load and the reverse torque load. This will lead to a much longer MTBF for the bearings.

Eventually request them to unconditionally update the Haldex software to the latest version.
This is valid for all VINs between H012596 and H200566.
