In my experience the updated haldex software only prelongs the life of the diff and it still fails. The "uprated" bearings again have little relevance, the issue is the bearing is just too small. The only long termnfix is fitting a proper sized bearing.

Is this what some of the transmission companies are offering with their uprated recon diffs e.g Bristol Transmissions? 1998 Feelander XDI Hardback - Gone

I (bell engineering) am the only one fitting larger bearings, all the others fit "uprated" bearings. I originally fitted the best quality standard size bearings but wasn't happy with that as couldn't see any improvement so came up with a better solution.

Before anyone moans about me posting commercial stuff, I'm just organising myself to sort an advertising deal with Freel2

Did some hardware modifications are in order for this?
Some machining in order to accommodate the new (bigger) sizes?

Mines now done 92k miles and still on original rear diff and haldex. IMO the fluids need changing/checking much more frequently, I am checking mine every 12 months. When I changed the fluids last year the levels were a lot lower than they should be and where very dark in colour. Each to their own, but if you, like me are thinking of keeping it for a few years I would recommend you carry out a fluid change and yearly checks. As I say, just my opinion based on what I saw.

I agree the haldex fluid should be changed, along with the filter. Volvo actually state on their cars the fluid and filter should be changed every 20k, so why Landrover (and ford) haven't said the same for their cars is beyond me. The state of the filter on cars with 40k is unbelievable, OK it proves the filter is working but I wouldnt want to bet it lasting another 40k before getting blocked enough not to cause issues!!

Out of interest how do you drain the oil, do you remove the haldex or suck it out the fill plug with a tube?? The units hold about 700ml from dry.

The other question is, on average then do the diff bearings in the manual version wear quicker than in the autos or does it make no difference at all?
And whether it has a TD4 or SD4 engine?

Doesn't seem to make any difference, I do see a lot of autos but I suspect that's because the auto was a more popular model (its what I bough the wife )

I use a syringe to remove the fluid, a large one used for lambing. Takes a bit of time, it easier than taking off the haldex but obviously if you took it off the car you would clean it completely. I think with an annual top up then partial drain to the correct level will suffice until I do a full drain again in a few years.

Yeah normal but the filter is getting blocked up with it and a new filter is defo a good option! It's isn't present in units with newer fluid what ever temo the oil is at.

Something normal in the eyes of LR...
