Earth strap or connectors in the passenger side footwell spring to mind http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic22521.html? Do you get this problem with both key fobs as it could one of those?

United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Sumatra Black

Hi lamb14

I had this (on a manual gearbox) just after purchase and also suspected a weak battery. The no load battery voltage is still a bit low at 12.5ish but the fault never came back so I suspected an intermittent clutch sensor. But the startup conditions on an auto are different: I assume the ECU has to know if it is in Park or Neutral but you didn't see any indication on the dash.
