Fuel/Mileage Range.

Filled the FL2 right to the top of the filler pipe & drove to Somerset last Saturday. Pretty sure when I filled up it read mileage to empty around 370 ish. Drove round all week & only filled right up to the top this morning on the way home which was 510 miles later, still had 19 miles on the range clock. Pretty reasonable I thought. Put 66 litres exactly in it for 510 miles. Not worked out yet what that relates to in MPG but after I filled it up it read Range 372 miles. I had that on for a few minutes & on the M5 I noticed it dropped to 368 miles. Forgot about it then checked it a while later & it had only dropped to 363 but I had done 125 miles lol. (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red.

yes …..

Yes …….. however surely the range indicated is only a rough guide based on very recent driving experience and fuel then in the tank. So if you fill up just after a very long drive on empty & fast roads, you will get high range numbers. If that was yesterday, and you've since done a couple of short trips on a cold engine, the range may initially be rather less generous.

That's my experience anyway. Range is useful but NOT to gather average MPG figures for the vehicle. Rolling Eyes Life is not a dress rehearsal!

I suspect it can never go above the range calculated for a full tank, but you can get more in the tank than LR state. I can just make it from home to France on a full tank, the light normally comes on within 10 miles disembarking from the ferry at Calias or Dunkerque which is 520 miles, I have never seen more than 460 miles as range to go. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

i quite often ignore the average mpg figures (both on my last FL2 and on my current Insignia CDTi)

I tend to just look at the range available and add that to the mileage already covered to give me a rough idea.

All these figures are intended just as a guide anyway and im pretty sure are not a truly accurate figure so take them with a pinch of salt.

The best way is to record how much fuel goes in, and how much goes in again to fill it back to the same level. using the mileage covered reading and the quantity of fuel used calculate the MPG from that.

That's where the problem lies, filling to the same level, I've never managed to brim the tank, just when I think I have, put the nozzle away and about to put the cap on, it glugs and the fuel disappears Very Happy my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

yeh I have that same problem too Laughing

LRO magazine run their real world fuel test that way and invariably shoot the manufacturers figures down in flames.

All that concerns me now is that with the FL2 I was filling up every week, and with the insignia i'm filling up every 2 to 2 1/2 weeks............... and that cant be a bad thing Smile

Yes, I found that but I persevered & from when it first clicked I just gently squeezed the trigger & got another £4 or £5 in the tube till it did actually get to the top. I did that when I refilled with 66 litres for the 510 miles. (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red.

Correct me if i am wrong. I think the miles readout on the dash after filling up take its figures from the last miles you have done like on my motorcycle. What it does is takes the average of the last run and equates it to whatever the tank sensor says its now got in it. Think of it like this, if your readout for the last 100 miles of town driving you did was say 5 miles/litre if you then put 50 litres in the tank the distance readout on the dash would say you have 5x50 = 250 miles range, if it said 10 miles/litre then the tank was topped up to 50 litres the readout would say 50x10 = 500 miles range. Hopefully thats correct, This is how it appears to work on my triumph motorcycle.

Probably most pumps are calibrated towards the end of the calibration that favours the seller and not the buyer. +/- 0.3% http://www.measurement.gov.au/Documents/PetrolPump.pdf Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I have only filled the car 10 times so it's not really a large enough sample. The car fuel consumption figures range from (maximum range) -5.1% to +3.8% as compared to the petrol station receipts. The car to date has shown an average over estimation of 0.4% Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
