Sudden drop in MPG

I know that I've only had the Freelander for a couple of weeks but today I noticed that my MPG has reduced dramatically, on my daily commute I have been maintaining an average of 44MPG, I drive at a reasonably steady 60 on the M6 for most of the journey, however today I have noticed that my fuel consumption has rocketed, the instantaneous struggled to get above 30MPG, and my range (with a 3/4 full tank) has gone from 490 miles to 360 miles in a 20 mile journey. I have done 175 miles n the first 1/4 tank and this issue seems to only to have started on today's journey.
At 30 in 4th I usually have about 38-45 , today, 25.

I first thought I might have a flat which has made the car drag, but all of the tyres look well inflated (I will check them properly when I get home)

Should I be worried?

Neil

It was a bit colder this morning at 6 degC, but no wind or rain. Even sitting behind a truck at 55 I barely reached a 40MPG on the instantaneous. Neil Hampson

have you changed fuel, main brand to supermarket etc

only real way is to record mileage full tank to full tank, ignore the trip computer and see the difference then Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

You don't have a binding hand brake do you? I had something similar although I was getting intermittent squeals. It turned out to be a binding hand brake....at least I believe it was. I did have the front transfer box replaced at the same time. Anyway, after the brakes were done my fuel economy improved again.

The trip computer doesn't give an instantaneous mpg read-out, it's an average over the last so-many miles (can't remember how many off-hand). So it's probably just adjusting to your driving and journeys. It does tend to go up and down, and I certainly wouldn't start to worry just yet.

My trip gives continuous mpg and an average , I keep it on continuous when driving and look at the average at the end of the journey . Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

My understanding of the trip computer was that the 'Average MPG' was the average MPG since the reset button was pressed, the Instant was an average of the last 10 seconds or so of driving. It certianly updates itself that often.

It could have been me, but it did feel as if the car was being held back slightly, the same way as you get with a (not quite) flat tyre. I will sit it out and see, it was just alarming to see the average dropping rapidly over the course of 20 miles. Neil Hampson

Could be a few reasons, fuel quality, flat tyre, binding brake were mentioned others are clogged fuel/air filter etc. could be the factor.

Make sure you had not accidentally switched on a terrain programme i.e. GGS which alters settings, throttle response etc. All FL2's (3) Gone
