I have never had a CV joint boot fail on any of my cars but I have had a few where the retaining clips have come off and let water in. In the case of a FL2 it ruined the CV joint on a front half shaft..
Last one I did was on my daughter's Renault, I used a huge jubilee clip which was acceptable for the MOT. (incidentally the tester said that in theory, if it was securely tied with string it would pass as long as it was secure at the time of testing !) 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

my experience of a cv joint problem was occasional vibration then I discovered what was going on.

Silicon boots would be non stick I suppose?

Sounds like CV joints!
I have very little experience with the boots but applying logic, there appears to be no reported premature failure of the std part so I'd probably stick with the LR ones as they seem to be up to the job. Putting another part on you'd be taking a risk!  MY15
