South Africa 2008 Freelander 2 2.0T SE Manual Lago Grey
Freelander 2 in South Africa

Hi everybody. I just joined the forum. I am in the proses of buying a 2008 freelander 2, with the 6 speed manual gearbox.
A friend of mine got a 2007 model. I have always liked the vehicle untill a drove it on a 260 km trip. What a wonderful vehicle, comfort, good handling, economical, just love it to bits and decided to get me one.
The freelander 1 had a very bad reputation in South Africa (dont know about rest of the world). Engine and gearbox problems everybody tells me but you buy them for little more than a bar of soap.
The freelander 2 is scares because very little were sold due to its fore runner and it seems that those people having it does not sell.
I found one for sale in a very very good condition, well looked after vehicle, must have belonged to a car lover like myself. Its done 110 000km but runs and look like new. I am buying it before anybody els do.
Can anybody tell me if there is anything spesific I must pay attention to? Weakspots?
My friends automatic box just gave problems with the torqueconvertor at 170 000km, he had it fix and as happy as ever. People say the automatic box tend togive a little problems, is this true? Mine is a 6 speed manual, anything I should know about the box?

Thanx for anybodies help and for a great forum.

One of my sons is a geologist working in countries like Mauritania, DRC, Zambia and Botswana and he says that you hardly ever see a LR in Africa these days as everyone drives Nissans or Toyotas and the dealer service for those is fairly patchy. I was in Botswana last year and saw one Disco and that had SA plates. Whatever you do you will need a good dealer available. The FL2 is a lot better than the FL1 but in my experience less reliable due to complexity and I think this is where the Toyotas and Nissans in Africa score, they will just have a centre diff lock rather than fancy traction control. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto
