Fog lights and being seen

This morning was horrendous on the road had the front and rear fogs on all the way to work. Not surprisingly I seen many cars with no front fog lights on (they did have them fitted) and some with no rears on! The vast majority of new cars that did have the rears on only have one bulb on the drivers side. Why do manufacturers save on the cost of some additional wiring, bulb holder and a bulb and decide that only 1 fog light is adequate Shocked Also another bitch today front fogs lights should be made compulsory especially up here!

Much safer with 2 rear fog bulbs if one blows at least you still can be seen with the one that's remaining!

I had heard that with 2 rear fog lights, under some circumstances their brightness could overwhelm the rear brake lights. So someone following behind might not realise you are braking. With 1 fog light you can still tell when the brake lights come on.

Fog? its been sweltering down here today, not a cloud in the sky, dont need any lights at all here not even DRLs. Thumbs Up

One car can be over lit then the next cars got nothing at all, maybe the cars should have auto mist sensing lights too so they come on by themselves when necessary?

Fog lights are stupid, they serve no purpose other than to blind other drivers and allow the driver of the illuminated car to drive as normal, often 70+ speeds down the motorway but the fog lights make them invincible.

In the next few weeks there will be a multiple pile up somewhere, let's hope none of us are involved Thumbs Up

agreed Evil or Very Mad
There seems to be a trend these days to blind everyone as much as possible. Front & rear lights. I think it is counter productive as if it hasn't got a blinding light, its not there. Lighting needs to be appropriate for the conditions but that is long gone I'm afraid.

Agree. People use fog lights in the rain on the motorway! It was a while ago when I took my test but I seem to remember the Highway Code saying fogs should be used for visibility less than 100m?

Just checked and found:"You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced" then you have to turn them off when visibility returns. Yawn

Simple solution to their misuse.....given the amount of control the ECU has over a car these days, simply set it to restrict the car's speed to 25mph if fog lights are on? If visibility is bad enough to warrant having them on then you shouldn't be travelling faster than that.
Let's see how many Audis, BMWs etc drive around with them on all the time then! 2011 SD4 HSE Auto

Not even to see if they work, to be honest I forget it has them, as my D4 GS didn't have front fogs.

The SE comes with them as standard, along with cruise control and auto lights/wipers which I've upgraded to xenons. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

Couldn't agree more. There are too many drivers with front fogs on saying 'Look at me, I'm a Censored head'.
The conditions in the O/P photo are nowhere near bad enough to warrant fog lamp use. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

I agree about rear fogs - and only put mine on when needed and turn them off when it clears again. However on my wife's car the front fog lights actually act as/include the DRLs - so be careful you don't get confused and blame drivers when it's what their car is designed to do.

I followed a freelander this morning that had led lights in the bumper where the reflectors supposed to be it was like looking at a red sun from a distance on the A38.

must of been these with the brake light wired as the side light?
