normally, my independent garage is very competent, but this time.........

3 days ago, I collected my FL2 from my garage - the differential was overhauled (from a specialist, they just put it out and back in). After driving about 700km I looked under the car and found traces of fresh oil and an oildrop at the downside of the differential. Argh....

I got another 800km before me to drive. And I hope, that the car will make it to my garage...??

Please have a look at the pictures I took (after cleaning the oildrops away, but you can still see where they were - especially on pic 2).

Hopefully that is nothing to worry about, a small amount of oil can look like a lot and it may be possible that they spilt some while reinstalling the diff and didn't do a good job of cleaning. I would definitely get it checked out but I would imagine that it should be ok.

There were two fresh oildrops hanging on the differential, before I cleaned it. So I don't think that it still was oily because of the installation. I think the leak is from the right final drive (second picture).

But if you don't scream "go directly to a garage", I take the risk and do nothing and drive home with it, like it is (800km).

I had the rear diff job done a few thousand miles ago and had an "oil leak" almost immediately. When I took the car back they said that they had put too much oil the diff (supposed to be 700ml) and that it was coming out of the breather on the top. It was OK after they got the level correct. (this was a LR dealer !) 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Update:
My differential was checked at my garage - no leak detected. So it must be the normal oil drops, when you put the differential back in.

Hi there, I had the same " low level repair" done by my local LR agent , almost immediately noticed oil on my driveway!
Back to the dealer and after a clean around the top of the diff housing they said it was fine ?? I was sceptical but it was ok, seems they had spilt some oil and there are lots of little places it can sit until you start hooling around. So yes , with luck this will be your experience.  Back in the fold after 8 yrs. V8 Disco 300 series-Gone.07 Freelander 2 HSE Auto Rimini Red.

Hi my 2011 sport Le is back in to my local LR dealer for the 4th time with leaking Diff seals.
The problems started following a pinion bearings and seals repair in December where they were replaced for a noisy diff but no leaks.
A few months later on the vehicles 1st hour long journey(we only drive local normally) the diff lost oil towing my caravan as I discovered up my caravan front. My local Hatfield's found the metal breather pipe on top of the haldex unit snapped clean off and carried out a repair. The cause of the snapped breather is unknown.
I got the car back went on holiday and on arrival at my caravan site (same site) the same again happened but this time oil from the new seals leaking so Hatfield's replaced them again and gave me the car back. 1 day later oil leaked from a driveshaft seal so returned for new one and left car with dealers who told me after testing now the other side driveshaft seal now leaks so they are holding onto car until sorted. I/we now think there may be a breathing issue and the car is still in the dealership been tested/repaired.
Lucy LR customer care has been involved in this and I have had good service from Hatfield's so far with a courtesy car provided and no bill to pay but it is a bit puzzling why this is happening so if anyone else has had this problem and knows of a cure please let me know, thanks Alan.

One issue is that when taking out the Haldex (and rear diff may be same) oil gets lodged in the support bracket so can drip for a few days. My advice for anyone worrying following a repair is to give it a wipe off and check again in a couple of days. Most of the time all will be well. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years
