United Kingdom 2010 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Sumatra Black

Hi Everyone.

I've just picked up my 12 plate HSE last week, i noticed straight away that there was a rumbling coming from the rear end.
I coundn't make comment to Rocar Moores LR as the day after collection i set off to France, whilst away i had chance to analyse the noise.

Its more of a general knocking sound that increases with speed anywhere between 10mph and 30mph, over this speed the noise becomes a droning sound. I can't tell which side its coming from.

My tyres are PIRELLI SCORPION ZERO which are 73db rated and have about 20% wear.

i've never had bearing or diff problems with my other Freelander's even at 90,000 miles and with the above tyres on my last Freelander.

Just a little worried in regards to all the posts and problems folks have been having.

Hopefully it will be a wheel bearing.

I have a very similar noise on mine & will go down the path of changing wheel bearings first!

I'm fairly certain it is the r/h rear but as you say, it can be hard to pick which side the noise comes from.

I have already tried a different set of wheels/tyres that I have & it made no difference. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

Isn't it amazing that the LandRover brand is all about off road capability, toughness, strength, enduring etc and the things that are most likely to go wrong are in the 4 wheel drive system? I know that fundamentally the FL2 is a Ford underneath but it doesn't bode well for the future of the marque. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I've just developed the dreaded droning sound on my 59 plate 89,000 mile FL2 - the noise is most prominant at around 32 to 45 mph for some reason. Yet to have it checked out to see if it's diff, bearings or indeed tyres but...

... if it is the diff and given that when I bought the car two years ago it had a full service history from a LR dealer (although its last two services I have had done by an independent) should the fact that there was some sort of recall/haldex update notice from LR should that have been done by the LR dealer at one of its services and is there anyway of finding out if it had? And if it hasn't is there any come back?

If it is the diff what do people recommend remember it isn't in warranty and I want to keep the cost to a minimum - sending it off to be refurbed or purchase a refurbed unit or something else?

One of our FL2s going in next week for re-replacement (yes it failed again) wheel bearing, driver side rear replaced at 50k but started rumbling again after 15k miles. now on 70k and will be replaced under "component warranty" rather than extended warranty. I was thinking the other day that there can't be much rear wheel drive experience in Ford these days so I wonder where they got this Censored underengineered design from? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

England 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Santorini Black

My 2007 started humming about twelve months ago. It started to get worse quickly when we returned from our caravan holiday in France. I decided to bite the bullet and have the diff repaired. I spoke to Paul at Stephensons Transmissions in Preston. He's rebuilt a few and thinks it's criminal that they are failing. Anyway, I dropped it off in the morning and collected it in the afternoon. What a difference, it's like a new car! Thank you very much to Paul and his colleagues Stephensons Transmissions.

LR specialist in Kent who will replace the diff bearing?

I have just been quoted over £1800.00 for a new rear diff. The LR specialist said they don't do diff repairs. Does anyone know if anywhere in Kent that will replace the bearings in the rear diff?

Thanks

Have it taken out and sent off by courier to someone who can refurbish it with a warranty (noticed some names on this site now) if the locals don't feel up to the job. Wink FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

If you have full LR service history plus a track record of ownership of other LR products you have good cause for it being repaired by LR at only 5 weeks out of warranty and fight any talk of a contribution from you. Yes its a known fault so it may be worth emailing Honest John for his opinion, I would at least check out his web site for what part of consumer law this could well be covered under. Good luck.

Oh and let us know how you go on as I have never been happy about a noise I get and I have 3 weeks left on my warranty. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years
