7'' gps vs. 7'' tablet

Hello!
I want to fill the space in the center console of the Freelander.
I saw and read already some topics and really fiting a 7-inch screen in that space is ideal.
I thought to install a 7'' GPS but I remembered: can I mount a 7-inch tablet?
The tablet has gps, and more stuff.
What is your opinion?
Regards

I was thinking of doing something similar with a cheap tablet. It's interesting that the extra goodies that you get when you buy a high spec vehicle like an HSE are usually items of consumer electronics and cheap electric motors (sat nav, hi fi electric seats etc) that are fairly cheap to add yet the price premium is significant. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I don't see how mounting would be a problem (7" screen is 7" screen), but a few issues might need to be resolved...

- will the tablet start automatically with ignition on, and turn off automatically with ignition off?
- how is the screen size in relation to the device size?

I put the TomTom Start60 in ours, fits very well. I also have a cheap tablet which is a similar size. The TomTom is a much better device, especially the speed/responsiveness, also the screen of the TomTom is actually bigger than the tablet, even though the devices are the same size. 2008 Freelander 2 HSE Si6 Black/Black - Hers

I considered using a tablet but the auto on/off was the 'deal breaker' I did find an app that turned the tablet off when power was disconnected but nothing to turn it on when power was connected, also the boot-up time was long compared to a dedicated SatNav.

I did try my 7" Samsung Galaxy which was too big so in the end I fitted a Garmin 6" device.

Hello!
Did you install it inside the central console, in the cubic space above the radio?
Do you have pictures?
Tomtom Start 60 costs 160 euros, more or less. But if it is really good, then it is a good buy.

I used a few blobs of body filler to secure the SatNav behind the surround.

I chose the Garmin Nuvi 2699 LMT-D because;

It has Bluetooth for hands-free telephone.
You can connect a wireless reversing camera to it
My wife was used to using a Garmin SatNav

Hello.
It fits very fine!
But mine has already bluetooth so i do not need it in the gps.
And here in Portugal, Garmin Nuvi 2699 costs 250 euros.

I have installed a tablet to replace my broken TOMTOM 60 , broke the screen.
Have installed TT app for navigation , also 64gig memory card for music , tethering it to my phone allows use of internet radio . Sound is transmitted via bluetooth to aux input using adapter. Works really well , it is connected to perm live , and by turning off power with a switch the Autosleeper App puts tablet in sleep mode , But normally i just close any apps and retrn to home screen and after 2 mins goes into sleep mode. Tablet was from Currys
an Archos 70 i think , needed some modding to case but you dont see it.[/img]

Great update you did in your Freelander 2.

This weekend took apart the center console and took some measures.

So by that measure, the screen 147mm x 86mm may have. These are well measured mm?

And to install the part of behind of plastics, can fit a GPS or tablet with measures 185mm x 115mm. Do you confirm these measures?

Regards

So, do you have an app the turns the tablet off? And how do you turn it on?

When I removed th centre console,i made a cardboard template for the max width , 187mm is about right. and height .Cutting the cardboard to this i inserted it behind console panel so i could draw the shape of the opening onto it. With a sharp knife cut out the shape of the opening . When looking for a tablet all you have to do is overlay this onto the device so you know how the screen will fill the hole.

The tablet is powered by a step down 12volt to 5 volt usb lead attached via a switch attached to rear 12volt supply at back of console . I have removed aux outlet from console leaving it still attached but underneath. in the hole created i have put a round rocker switch . 1 usb outlet is attached to tablet usb cable the other is attached to a bluetooth dongle. from the dongle a 3.5mm audio cable fits into aux outlet.

I have an app called auto sleeper. When I turn the power off via switch the app puts tablet into deep sleepwith screen off. When I turn power on the app reboots screen on

Kitchener: That mod looks great - better than the OEM system in my 2014 FL2. Mine seems overly complicated. To simply tune to Radio 2 , for instance, takes a series of presses which is quite distracting. On my BMW there a series of numbered buttons which can be configured to any station - easy to select/change channel with one press - just like on old fashioned radios. Since Wogan left I only listen to the music on Radio 2 and flick to another channel as soon as the Evans bloke starts up. So I constantly flick between channels all way to work.

Anyone: Is it possible to create favourites on the OEM system ? Jules
