Looking to tint the whole back and rear windows, would like some opinions on what kind of % you would go for.
From time to time there will be tools in the back so would want it strong enough to not be seen into.

Also, have any of you had experience applying pre-cut tints yourself?

for the price I was charged, £150 for all rear windows I wouldn't bother with the hassle of ballsing it up yourself - It can only look dodgy at best lol.

I went for the one lighter than Limo tint and wished now that I'd gone darker - you can still see in in normal light but the view from inside is not much different to the fronts which you NEED to leave untouched - limo is the best bet if you are keeping items in the car - no doubt about it.

I applied some diy film on the fixed rear windows of my Defender a few years ago - as much to keep down the heat on sunny days as for security.

It certainly did the job, though with my perfectionist's eye I subsequently found several air bubbles which I missed when I did the job.

The difficult bit is trimming the edges to fit the window - you cut the film slightly larger than you need, then trim with a razor once you've applied it. Patience, and a steady hand (neither of which I have) are the key here. Whilst any jagged edges aren't visible from the outside, they certainly are from the inside.

Any idea off the top of your heads what the legal tint allowance for the front passenger & drivers side are?

Easy way to tell without worrying about percentages - the fronts shouldn't really look darker than the windscreen. Very little in it between 70/75%

Think I'll go for limo at the back and 70% on front two.

Still somewhat tempted to give it a go myself as you can get pre-cut packs and think it'd be a nice weekend project, hmmm

Aren't the fronts at the legal limit from the factory?

i.e. the application of any tint to the front would make them illegal?

I have limo tint on mine. There is little difference between a 20% tint and a limo 5% tint when looking out of them during the day. Externally yes they're is a difference. I'm very pleased with a 15% tint on the rears.

£180 from a local tinting company who do a lot of main dealer work.

I considered getting a film kit and some tools, but for the extra £££, it was worth giving someone else the hassle, and in real terms the hourly rate was very good

I thought that ANY film (tint) added to the fronts was illegal - Man CIty all got caught out for theirs...

Is it really worth giving the Police a ready made excuse to stop you every single day to check them / require you to get a VOSA check?

I'd rather they left me alone to go about my business. I once had my private plate made up with a font that looked normal to the naked eye but really confused their beloved Automatic Number-plate recognition machines and they went nuts - used to pull me over and follow me home all the time - got fed up and although they never fined me, the sheer hassle was enough to get me to fix it.

It's worth bearing in mind that whilst limo black tinted windows are fine in daylight, at nighttime they are very difficult to see out of - all you can see are headlights. So if you're reversing in a car park, for example, it can be very difficult to avoid unlit obstacles, eg bollards, other cars, etc.

That is why tinting of the front windows to any great extent is a very bad idea (and illegal)
