Windows 10 free upgrade

I noticed a little windows symbol on the task bar of my PC. I've been given a free upgrade to Windows 10 in July. I thought it was a con but looking on the net it's all above board. People with windows 7 are being given the option from Microsoft of a free upgrade. Has anyone else seen this upgrade?

I was reading on the net that Microsoft are looking at providing operating systems free of charge to help combat forged copies. Any how I'll see how my upgrade goes at the end of July, I might be good or it might be pants!! Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

Yes, I've had the same offer.
Mrs Pegleg has Windows 10 and doesn't like it. It's still like Windows 7 with an awful new 'front' to it.
Some people like it, some not. I don't like it either so I'm staying with 7 for now. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

I was forever fixing 98 and to a lesser degree XP. Mrs Pegleg did have Windows 8 which has taken more fixing than the World Cup votes Big Cry
Personally I've had no probs with Windows 7 in 5 years of using it other than a stuck email. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Yup, 7 is by far the best they have released in quite a while.
But like it or not, its all changing so we may as well give it a go. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues
2019 DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…

Windows 10 is allegedly to be the last major release of Windows. It will thereafter just evolve but it's a safe bet that evolution won't be free. If MS are giving Win10 away (which they are) it is because they need people to be tied in to it.

That model is unlike the major releases of windows / office etc of the past where upgrades were purely elective.

It'll be interesting to see this one develop.

If you're running Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1, you will be able to migrate for free to Windows 10 any time in the 12 months following launch (scheduled 29 Jul).
MS have said that this will be 'the last edition' of Windows. Effectively that means that there won't be a Windows 11, Windows 12 etc but Windows 10 will be continuously updated, via Windows Update I guess, via automatic updates. So, yep, free for life (whatever life means).
I have been running Windows 10 on a test machine and there are still glitches, still some device (& app, incl AV software) incompatibilities that MS or the manufs will no doubt fix before launch. I anticipate moving to Windows 10 from my Win 8.1 machine as Win 10 is effectively a much better version of Win 8.1, with better interface, better browser, more security etc.
I'll prob keep my Win 7 machine on Win 7 ... nice to have some options. ...

When my Win7 laptop died just before Xmas I bought a 8.1 laptop which was crap compared with the 7 version some problems were the PC others 8.1, I quickly realised that I should have bought a touch screen version. The OH's died last week, and we replaced it with a touch screen version, many of the pain in the neck operating glitches have now gone. Seems that PC's need to be operated like phones with the new windows, which for office may be a problem, unless of course you are under 21 and preferably 12. Hopefully mine may improve with 10. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Windows 8 and beyond are geared to touch devices, so a unified OS for all Windows devices - PC / tablet / smartphone. It makes sense for MS to do this. They need to re-invigorate their market, in the face of competition from Apple & from the range of Android devices.
Personally I think the common OS works well. I have laptops / PCs and a smartphone all running Windows. They work well. ...
