On the same road some five and a half hours later a lorry overturns causing the same delays, lorry driver charged. All accidents are perceived to be caused by plonkers and possibly are. :lol my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I can see the day coming when a motorist or company with vehicles stuck in these hold ups, file for loss of earnings or time, especially if the crashed driver was found to be negligent and at fault.

The bit I don't follow about accidents and the associated delay is that it often would take only a few minutes to clear debris enough to get traffic moving again (with the removal from the scene of big stuff later) - yet the police close the road for six hours to do "investigation". However the public never seem to get to hear the outcome of these investigations. I imagine a huge pile of reports gathering dust somewhere.

As accidents are apparently inevitable, there should at least be included in the design of dual carriageway roads a frequent emergency cross over point so that a temporary contraflow can be established around the obstruction. Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

this used to be the reasoning behind the Motorway police having Range Rovers, as they had the towing capacity (with uprated axles etc) to pull pretty much anything off the highway and get people moving again with minimal delay.

now they, and the HATO's have Disco's, Land Cruisers etc but they need the extra power and axle weights to carry all the traffic cones and investigative gizmo's to close off the highway completely while they find who was to blame.

Slightly different but a friend of mine used to be in the Nottinghamshire Firearms team and they drove around in a Volvo V70 which had been uprated to take all the extra weight. But every year they were required to carry more and more kit (including emergency medical gear in case they actually shot anyone), and the V70 could no longer take the loads required. They had 4 brand new uprated Disco 4 in the compound waiting for the Volvos to snap in half before they could be used.

I have been delayed countless times by unnecessary road closures by the police - in a couple of instances where vehicles have run completely off the road and onto a field at the side of the motorway and thus causing no possible obstruction to anyone, yet the standard response is to close the whole carriageway.

As if that wasn't bad enough, I see the police are now bringing charges against people driving past and taking photographs of accidents, though exactly what they're being charged with isn't clear!

At a guess, the offence would be that of driving without due care. Not unreasonable as the picture taker's attention must be diverted, albeit briefly, to use a handheld device.

If Plod is having a bad day though you might even be charged with dangerous driving. Perhaps unreasonable but prevailing circumstances may say otherwise.

I have been waiting for that too.
If a driver is negligent he should be held to account. couple of times I have come close to missing a plane or ferry because some idiot can't drive. (yes I do give myself enough time).
