Formula One : Pit to Driver Communications

My understanding is that they changed the rules late last season, preventing the pit from giving assistance to the driver that aids them in the driving of their own car, and/or gives them insight into the configuration/specification of an opponents car.

Either way, consider the following two Mercedes radio calls from today's Canadian Grand Prix.

Hamilton/Pit
Hamilton: What about the other car?
Pit: Nico is safe on fuel, safe on fuel, but saving brakes, saving brakes.

Rosberg/Pit
Rosberg: How is the other car on fuel?
Pit: We can't comment on that Nico.

Huh? What's the difference between the two requests, and/or answers that makes one illegal and the other not?!?

I wonder if there will be an inquiry into this?
Hamilton received info he shouldn't have been given.
The race, was it a race? Lift and Coast, what is that all about, ridiculous that the pinnacle of MotorSport has been reduced to this.

I'm not so sure......

Reading around the subject, it would SEEM there was nothing wrong with the information given to Hamilton - the point then, is why wasn't the same information given to Rosberg?

This then makes it an internal team issue, rather than an offence under the regulations.

If I were Rosberg, I'd be wanting to have a robust conversation with the pit wall crew.....

Possibly engineers interpretation bring different?

THE FIA's FULL CLARIFICATION OF TEAM RADIO SITUATIONS

The FIA's note issued to teams made clear what team messages - either through pit boards or radio communications - that are and are not allowed from now on.

Here is the full list:

- Tyre specification of a competitor.
- Indication of a potential problem with a competitor's car during a race.
- Information concerning a competitors likely race strategy.
- Yellow flags, blue flags, Safety Car deployment or other cautions.

WHAT IS NOT ALLOWED

- Sector time detail of a competitor and where a competitor is faster or slower.
- Adjustment of power unit settings.
- Adjustment of power unit setting to de-rate the systems.
- Adjustment of gearbox settings.
- Learning of gears of the gearbox, allowing the ECU to record the position of the gears releative to each other for the seamless shift system (will only be enforced from the Japanese GP onwards).
- Balancing the SOC [state-of-charge of batteries] or adjusting for performance.
- Information on fuel flow settings (except if requested to do so by race control).
- Information on level of fuel saving needed.
- Information on tyre pressures or temperatures (will only be enforced from the Japanese GP onwards).

Interesting....

Surely that would include the conversation where, when told he needed to "save a little fuel", Hamilton asked, "how much is a little? 100?", and was then told, "no, lift and coast for 50m should do it"?

In any event, whether it is allowed or it isn't, it seems that Mercedes aren't consistent. Whilst I appreciate we don't get every radio message, it seems that on the face of it Hamilton was getting information Rosberg wasn't.

If I were Rosberg, I'd be pretty hacked off.

EDIT

Re-reading Taz's list of rules, I also seem to remember both Mercedes (and many others) being warned about brakes being "critical" and the need to save brakes. According to the list, this is not permitted either?!!!?!

A bit Off Topic to the initial post but not worth raising a new thread.

When Vettel went for an overtake on Hulkenburg whilst entering and going through an "S" bend.
Because of closeness (or contact), Hulkenburg ended up spinning and when Vettel passed, all his four wheels were totally off the track.
And as Hulkenburg was still going, I always thought that Vettel would have to hand the place back or get penalised for it ?

This was never picked up on BBC commentary or post discussions ..... so maybe I picked it up wrong. Confused
Did I? FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Brodit active iPhone holder + Brodit dash clip,
Bluetooth Music Streaming Module.
