Had anybody encountered this? Last week I was running very low on fuel. My Freelander 2 (2007) was showing I had fuel to last for 8 miles. It then suddenly dropped to 3 miles and almost immediately after that it dropped to 0 before I could get to the garage (a total of 2 miles from when I started). At this point the car suddenly dropped speed to 50 mph as if a speed limiter had kicked in. Can anybody tell me anything about this?

i understand this is a standard feature to ensure that you don't actually run out of fuel which is a big problem to sort out. In other words it will stop before it runs out. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Thanks for that. The issue I have now is I think it has affected the engine performance as it 'feels' strange since but not all the time. It is mainly at lower speeds around 30mph. I did not actually run out of petrol thankfully.

Given that these cars seem to be sensitive to fuel filter problems it is possible you might have drawn some crud from the low tank. Watch out for "reduced engine performance" message or hesitation on pulling away. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

However, it sounds like you have the dreaded erratic fuel gauge syndrome. Lots of threads about that.

Diesel models WILL cut out before tank is empty, you will have warnings, this is to ensure pump and system does not run dry and cause damage.
Benefit is that engine will start immediately on filling fuel. You can not bleed common rail systems like we did many years ago by slackening injector unions. WARNING!!! common rail systems run at extremely high pressure which could and would cause serious injury. The escaping fuel would lance a finger off or worse.
