My two previous cars each about a quarter million km. Both still had there original gear boxes. 2 clutches on the first car, one on the second car. I do push my cars somewhat, but only to a point that I think is reasonable. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device! I don't know why, I have had a few gearboxes replaced or repaired, never, ever one single clutch though, maybe there is a story there My early life was as a service engineer, chasing around with a heavily laden car, mainly Astra or Escort estates, so not the best cars.

That was my thought however we have had 4 in the family and only (!) two have had a problem. In both cases it was difficulty in engaging 5th diagnosed as a synchromesh problem requiring the box to be sent off to a specialist. Agree about the common denominator theory being suspicious though. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto 5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto Now Discovery Sport P250 MHEV SE |

As I understand it the Discovery Sport, in manual form, is allowed the full potential of the engine at 190ps. How do they do this and is it a way ahead for Freelander 2 drivers who drive TD4 manuals and despair at its tortoise like response below 1100 rpm? No I`m not going to buy one!

Out of curiosity, what would a 'towing' setting achieve on a manual car?

Obviously it can`t govern the manual gearbox but would, via the ECU, modify the engine parameters to reduce the starting stresses with extra loading from towing, so protecting the components in the transmission that are deemed not up to par by LR |

The engine management system does change the way the automatic gearbox operates when towing. But only if using genuine electrics. This doesn't work with after market electrics. I don't have any problems with the standard torque provided in the lower gears, but would be interested in a remap that LOWERS my peak torque in gears 5 and 6 to overcome my slipping clutch problem.

Fix the clutch with what, the same spec components that can't handle the peak torque in 5th or 6th? Or have JLR up rated the clutch in the spare parts department and i am not aware of it?

My previous 08 SE was a manual. I sold it at 103,000 miles with the original clutch still working perfectly. Never any slip problems. What is your mileage?

Like many others have reported mine started slipping at about 25k. Now on 45k. I just modify my driving and don't put max torque on in 5th or 6th. Peugeot owners with same engine report the same issue. I would expect a remap to slightly reduce torque in 5th and 6th would be far cheaper than a replacement clutch / DMF and slave cylinder + labour and would give me similar driving performance to that at which i now drive. If it does not work then its easy to go back to the JLR map.

We are not alone then. Ironically it is the torque that makes the engine so good for me as I tow a caravan. The 08 SE took us through Denmark/Sweden/Norway a few years ago (2013) towing a 1450kg caravan 3,000 miles door to door without a fault. I only changed to get HSE spec and the auto box which I prefer. I feel for you Nigel, it must be frustrating to drive.
