Having been seduced from VW Tiguan to Dynamic SD nearly two years ago, it is time to return to VW.

First experience of "proper" 4x4 (some would disagree) was a 140 Tiguan SE with Tiptronic box, nearly three years of trouble free motoring but a Firenze red SD Dynamic drew me to Land Rover. Not the best of starts though with the common rail recall despite the dealer knowing it was needed but still sold me the car for me to have to return it for the check. Shortly after that was a failure of the key fob receiver in the roof lining, got two pleasant days with an HSE that despite same engine and gearbox did 4 miles per gallon more than my Dynamic.

Went to look at the Disco Sport and got an insulting offer as a part chop, so tomorrow pick up my brand new Tiguan R Line 177 DSG.

I'll miss the heated windscreen and voice control Meridian system but will not miss the 28.5mpg, exorbitant servicing costs and unimpressive dealership.

Landrovers fantastic when they work, but nightmare when they don't.

I would accept the 28 mpg of my freelander 2 all day if it would just keep doing what it does but at the mo it wont.

I don't demand too much It goes across fields maybe twice per week but that's not a lot to ask from a 4x4 surely, and it has been brilliant up to now.

All I can say is if your somebody that doesn't need to go across fields or mud once or twice per week or even down a bumpy lane every day or whatever, then don't even look at landrovers in future, stick to a VW for your mpg handling ect.

But saying that if you ever do need to get across a muddy field or a foot of snow, don't expect a tiguan r to get traction with those tyres lol

28mpg?

my SD4 auto averages around 36 with 39/40 on a run and I do take my off roads onto rough tracks, fields etc

im getting 35mpg in SD auto Jules

Funny enought it came down to exactly the reverse for me R-Line Tiguane v Freelander. To me it was no contest, the VW Seemed cramped and too car like. Felt like a golf on steroids where as the Freelander was roomy, spacious and drive far nicer than the Tiguan even on 19" The Freelander feeling far more grown up and robust.
Not quite 6 months in I'm very happy, fault free driving.

+1, I was looking on & off for 2 years. The Tiguan & Freelander were my final 2, but I wanted a proper Auto instead of a DSG for Sydney's start stop traffic. I also felt that the Freelander was in a different league. I love the command driving together with much better visibility. The Evoque in our family also had the same finalists! Still only 2500 km on the clock!

Me three. I looked at the Tiguan and it was nice 'n all but I didn't 'connect' with it like I did the FL2. I suspect a Tiguan (or a Volvo XC) would have been a more rational choice but I need to a car to 'feel' right

A new bigger and beefier Tiguan due in the next 12-18months. Could be of interest as it is bound to be more competitively priced than the DS for a poor old pensioner  MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

How on earth do you guys get 35MPG

I drive almost totally on the road no really short trips and not over enthusiastically ( lot of speed camreas aroun here ) and at best in the summer I can get 33MPG.

A long very steady drive to Spain ( rarely over 70 mph ) achieved a shade under 35MPG

Overall winter/summer mixed driving 29.plus a bit MPG

The car is HSE LUX auto with 28K miles so should be well run in now.

I am not complaining and can live with it but curious as to how you get a regular 35MPG.

My previous freelander 59 reg also gave a similar return

Firstly, the onboard computer may not be as reliable as we would like - the average on both of mine has sometimes varied quite substantially after a fillup.
Secondly it can depend very much on the distance driven, as the engine is very thirsty when cold. Mine indicates 36-39 on a long run, low twenties on the station run. Oddly, the mpg on my SD does not improve much with careful driving. If I thrash it a bit (as Alex P always recommends!) the indicated mpg often improves. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

Yes I find that aswell, economy improves with enthusiastic driving, lol.
All my travel is inner city CBD a/c on and short trips. I avg between 9.8 to 10.7L/100 about 28mpg. That's with 3800kms on the clock atm.
Longest long runs been about 50kms and the readout started tumbling into lower 8's but that including all CBD mileage aswell.

I'm hovering around 16 L/100 km (17 mpg), but around here it is start, stop with lots of stop! intersections everywhere, short trips & lots of hills etc, & the AC is on all the time. Also some roof racks to add a bit of wind resistance! I also run the tyres at 28 psi for a more comfortable ride. But I think the figures are reasonable under such circumstances. With 177 kW on tap I'm not complaining. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

With the seat issues I'm experiencing, I went looking at the VW Tiguan at the weekend (it was my second choice when I bought the FL2). It's undoubtedly a nice car, but it just lacks something compared to the Land Rover.

...although it does have a very comfortable driver's seat!

The other issue was the disappointing (but not unexpected after just 6-weeks of ownership) trade-in figure I was given for the FL2.

I did have to smile when the sales manager at the VW dealer suggested that the salesman mention to me that the Tiguan isn't quite as robust as the FL2, and, on seeing the 4x4 Response markings, it mightn't be the right car for me...

On the fuel consumption front, my '14 XS manual is showing a consistent 36mpg Gordon

35 mpg v 28 mpg. I'll speak in Australian terms. It is a difference 2L/100 km. For every 10,000 km a year one drives, the extra fuel costs at a $1.50 per litre is $300.00

My consumption according to RoadTrip is anything between 24 and 33 which is fine as I didn't buy a Land Rover for economy, my Disco was even worse.
I do a lot of short journeys which dosen't help neither does my lead foot. FL2 SD4 Metropolis Auto Santorini Black / ivory completely stock.

It's true that light travels faster than sound, some people look quite intelligent until you hear them speak.
