It also appears that the caravan must have gone the 'wrong' side of the island, as there's certainly not room for a truck and a car/van to get through side by side on the 'right' side of the road!

The camera view is set fairly far ahead, lot of sky and going down hill, I suspect that the tower is trying to get in before the Keep Left bollards, and the car was in the drivers view before the collision. One of those calculations the police do, speed limit, distance covered by both vehicles, and when the tower started the overtake. Think there was a bit of 50/50 both could have backed off, tower had a view of the arrows so knew the lane would run out, excuse if there was traffic covering the arrows, but it wasn't. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

The arrows indicate that traffic in the right lane should move left. The centre white line gives a full width lane to the right hand lane and restricts the left hand lane. While that could be a bit contradictory, the overall message is that the right lane continues (albeit moving across to the left) and the left lane expires. So the vehicles in the left lane should be prepared to adjust speed and filter in amongst traffic in right lane.
Guess the truck though it could outrun the car, which veered right to avoid a collision but hit the kerb and so spun around.
Another case where lacadaisical road markings actually make collisions happen rather than aid safety. Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

To me the trucker is blameless , the caravaner was trying to be a smart Censored , he should have pulled in behind the lorry. The caravan was on the wrong side of the island driving into on coming traffic then cut in too sharply clipped the truck and lost control .. Hope they throw the book at him. Imagine someone walking on either pavement with a pram .. Wouldn't stand a chance. Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

Quite agree Navigator, the road marking should indicate which lane has priority by continuing the centre line to left or right , but normally if the arrows are in your lane it normally indicates you move over, thus the inside lane has priority, should the arrows be in the inside lane turning out, then the outside lane has priority. I still think the tower was inside the traffic island, should he have had an FL2 SD he would have definitely made it if he floored it Laughing Laughing my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

to me the caravan tow car was in the wrong, duel lanes went in to a single lane a good distance prior to the first sound of an impact

looking at the footage the truck didn't do anything wrong, he kept in the left lane, didn't sway over to the right or anything, i think the footage is showing the car trying to nip in front of the truck , forgetting that he had a caravan on the back, (i.e. he pulled in too early) Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Quote from Lorry Driver

Ok just to set the record straight as I can't sleep. When I was stopped at the lights there was one car by the side of me the red one. There was a box van behind me that had been there from the time just after I came off the M5. We pulled off from the lights. I only have 6 tons on so was short shifting 480 horse truck gross weight no more than 22 to will get to 30 quite quick. As I was going through the gears the red car passed me I looked in the mirror and saw the box van was not trying to pass I did see a car and caravan but this was behind and to the right of the box van and looked like he was going to pull in behind the box van less than 8 - 10 seconds later glanced in the mirror as something caught my attention. This is when I hit the horn and the brakes as hard as I could. Stopped lorry in around 20 yards and got up on the curb as much as I dare as anyone who knows where this happened will tell you there are large concrete blocks just off the path where I stopped. I was not trying to block him out as estimates suggest he came through the lights at about 50 mph. Hope this makes sense as not had much sleep since. Oh and I am not a newbie. Had a class 1 for 24 years. Cheers

It sounds as though the accident may have begun prior to the impact with the truck, as the press article referred to has now been amended and says that the car appeared to hit a traffic sign (which must surely be the bollard on the island) before going out of control and hitting the truck. So it sounds as though rather than going one side or the other of the island he went over it!

Whatever, looks pretty clear to me that the car driver was at fault here and the truck driver did nothing wrong.

That then puts a different light on it, just shows, from the front not everything is clear cut. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I am amazed at the quality of the still images. Totally inexcusable in my opinion, it is a pity that it doesn't appear to be clamped down on, probably due to understaffing issues?

I agree Thumbs Up

I drive that section (caravan truck) regularly
along that section the caravan had no chance of getting past and their is another roundabout literally 100yds or less ahead. no point in such a daft attempt to squeeze past.

Spotted this on YouTube:

I think this comment sums it up well:

"This came about through lots of stupidity. The stupidity of the caravan tower because he didn't give himself enough time to get in the correct lane, the stupidity of the car in front of the lorry and the stupidity of the lorry driver because he didn't allow him in. Sure, it's annoying when people dive in at the last moment, but all this could've been avoided if the lorry driver hadn't been a dick and bullied the caravan tower back. The guy towing the caravan was equally a bully but two dickheads don't make a right. I think that's how the cliché goes!" LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby
