United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Santorini Black
Diff problem at 1500 rpm

Hi all

I haven't yet picked up my new (to me) FL2 HSE, 2011 SD4 with 36k miles, in Firenze red.

It arrived at the dealership this afternoon and I went for a test drive.

Lovely car but I heard/felt a vibration and noise at 1500 rpm

We went back to the dealership to pick up a technician to help to pinpoint the issue but without even coming out to the car the tech manager immediately said it would be the diff.

So.....is this a known problem?

What will it cost them to fix it?

Is there anything else I need to know?

Thanks in advance. Otherwise the car is lovely and if it is fixed, the deal is a good one I am happy with.

Get them to check it properly before you get it. I took mine in with a noise that everyone thought was the diff. Turned out to be a transfer box. £2500 worth of parts and work under extended warranty. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - tailgate paint issues, fuel gauge rewire, transfer box failure at 36k miles, clutch at 60k
Reconditioned diff at 70k ish
Sold at 84k and now on a DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because Iā€™m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though šŸ˜Ž

you should get a years warranty from the dealership, so you should not have any immediate worries anyway.

Thanks, all, I will give them the opportunity to get it fixed. I bought my Defender and SWMBO's FL2 there so have a good relationship with them.

Search around the forum you might find its a wheel bearing too. Sounds like they knew about the fault but this way they get paid to fix it under warranty. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto
Now Discovery Sport P250 MHEV SE

Quick update. Got cold feet over this vehicle, a 2011 HSE auto with 36k miles, since even if the diff(?) problem is fixed now, it has already had 2 owners in 4 years and there might be other problems to come along.

While the HSE is lovely inside with lots of toys, most of them I haven't had (coming from Defender and Series LR ownership) in the past so don't miss. The XS is still lovely inside and very comfortable.

I found a 2012 XS auto in black with only 27k miles on it for £550 less so have gone with that one, through the same dealership and have agreed the sale on that, so will pick it up on Friday afternoon. Very Happy

Now that this is a done deal, I look forward to spending more time on this excellent forum in the future, so this is also an introduction and hello thread now.

Good plan... always best to walk away if you are not convinced about a car. John
