England 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Sumatra Black

My warrior pick up truck tried to commit suicide by self combusting as I was driving along....thick toxic smoke filled the cab .....I managed to bump it up a curb and Switch it off, I had a melted mess of a wiring loom in the engine bay and I had to rewire half the car! I found the fault to be due to shorted wires in the indicator stalk! Luckily I'm an electrical engineer and fixed it myself Black FL2

I said I would keep you updated with the progress of this incident.

I have been in contact with Land Rover customer services to try to move things along. As it stands Land Rover have been unable to find the root cause of the fire.

I have also not received my money for the damaged items. I have been promised a cheque numerous times but it never arrives. Banging Head

My neighbours son had a week old (to him) BMW320 coupe that was a 59 plate with 40k on it go up in flames on their drive. That started as a short in the completely standard wireing loom under the rear seats! Still with the legal boys after 3 months Sad

Further update.

The dealers have given me the cheque for all my gear which is excellent.

The independent and Land Rover forensic exam was inconclusive. Land Rover are now going to do another exam but just by themselves.

Now need to claw back house insurance excess. Looks like a diggers coming along to dig up some lawn and drive to remove contaminants left from the fire.

Shocked could understand it after an accident/collision, but didn't realise that so many just spontaneously combust !!

It's actually happened to me three times (although never with devastating consequences)!
1 Austin Cambridge - switched off engine and noticed ignition light came on. Looked under bonnet and dynamo wires were smouldering. Pulled the wiring off (plastic melted into hand) and no more damage (except to hand).
2 Drove our Transit (school minibus) back from service and smelled smoke. This was the V4 petrol engine, and they had left an oily rag sitting between the cylinder heads. No damage done, no schoolkids incinerated.
3 Worst one was my wife's previous Astra. She came home, parked, a few seconds later a passing police car saw smoke coming from the car (actually it was the police in the car that saw it, not the police car itself). They trained an extinguisher on it, got the fire brigade there almost immediately and put it out. Needed a new alternator and some wiring.

We also had a massive car fire outside our S London house one night - melted the back of my neighbour's car - but that was a couple of bad boys destroying the evidence of their evil deeds. I slept through all the excitement and the Land Rover was unharmed. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

Some years ago my father in law drove a Rover 3.5. One morning he started it up and initially there was all sorts of banging and squealing noises which stopped after about a minute. He opened the bonnet and found the shredded remains of the family cat wrapped around the fan belt. He drove it to the local garage who hosed it out for him. The theory was that the cat must have crawled in from underneath to keep warm. Shocked 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Oh ouch. Luckily they designed the fl2 to stop that from happening, by covering everything with bits of plastic, and anyway you'd be lucky to get it to start in the first place Rolling with laughter

I was driving my mums mk1 escort and I had a friend in the passenger seat. As I used the indicator to turn out of a road, it caught fire and we both jumped out. I remembered I had my toolbox in the boot so while I whipped the bonnet up to disconnect the battery, I chucked the keys to my mate and shouted to him to get my tool box out the boot. I wanted a spanner to unbolt the battery leads, he thought I wanted to get them out to save them. He was a big lad. He opened the boot, took my cantilever toolbox out and chucked it as far as he could from the car where it promptly burst open and tools went everywhere! I couldn't find a 10mm anything amongst the collection of assorted tools all over the road and underneath parked cars so I ended up having to snap the battery leads with my bare hands. Laughing

Always worth asking for a copy of the fire officers report when trying to reclaim your excess. Fire officer will have been first on the scene when it ces to experts and if they have identified it as an electrical fault you can seek excess from the vehicle manufacturer/dealership on basis of defective vehicle.

So my fl2 is now in the dealer having the boot repainted again, this is what my car originally went to be fixed for when the loan car went kaboom. So i have an awful drug dealing ewok loan car now that the wife and I are to embarrassed to drive. So we're arguing over who gets to drive the citroen Picasso now!!.

I do worry about Land Rover, the loan ewoks tyres are under and over pressure at 15-41 psi, the fuel guage dosnt work, the gearbox makes a grinding noise and the exhaust is blowing and the turbo is whistling for England.

If my car comes back unfixed this time I will park it at the dealer and just walk away. Go buy another citroen.

You're certainly getting a rough ride of it. Maybe in a previous life you owned a Jeep and this is your karma...
