2014 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Loire Blue

I have claimed on my house insurance, they have appointed a loss adjuster who has arranged for an environmental company to complete a clean up so that's in hand. It's taking a long time to sort though and my current leather seats are becoming oily from the kids walking on the drive and then climbing in the car.

I was told The dealers insurance have refused cover as the vehicle appears defective, this view may have changed, So I still may have to pay an excess for the car and then the driveway. The dealer did say I would not be left out of pocket but I am so that was a bit of a fib.
The dealer did give my wife some pink flowers (interest thing to give a lady who's job involves public speaking on gender stereotypes)

I also got a full tank of fuel when my car was returned but considering I have used probably two tanks returning my car to the dealer with faults I thought they could have done more, (maybe fit a fire extinguisher)!!!!.

I am quite Glad I have a long drive.

I did run out with a fire extinguisher to put the fire out but the key would not work so I could not get access, then the kids followed me out so I thought I better sit back and Watch it burn.

Presumably it's all the plastic burning, it always amazes me that whenever I try to start a fire deliberately (ie a bonfire or in the log burner and not a car!) how difficult it is to get things going - and have you ever tried to set alight some diesel? (ex Chemist speaking)

A bad thing to happen, but let's not loose grip on reality. A number of things could have started this. Doesn't mean there is a fault with the a Freelander 2. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Weird thing is mine was in the dealers on a previous occasion Having a burning smell investigated, and I now seem to be suffering electrical issues on my car. This just rubbed salt into the wound. Shocked

Why? is it a slow news day, cars go up in flames in their dozens every day, or are you chasing sensationalism and compensation?

Newspapers 'buy' stories that will sell tens of thousands of copy, a Freelander going up in smoke on a dirt track is hardly going to raise eyebrows, might get a few comments in the local boozer, that's aboit it.

Papers are not my style, It is of interest to my parish magazine but that's about it.

I would just like Land Rover, if you are listening to give me the money you said I would get to buy my child seats as they were damaged In the fire. (Along with lots of other things but I just want some child seats).

If I can I will update the forum with the findings Land Rover come to on what they think happened, after they examine the car. But as it was not my car I doubt they will let me know.

Morning Wurzel
Its at your discretion really, personally I would PM him and keep it private, if its public a bun fight could ensue and you would lose out as LR wouldn't want to get involved in a public spat. Of course, if they don't play ball then a few wisely chosen words on a public forum may make them sit up.

Also look closer to home, anyone in your locality with a grudge that could be playing silly beggers? all things that need to be considered, it wouldn't be the first time a brand new car has been attacked by jealous idiots, they wouldn't know its not your shiny brand new car.

Good luck with it all and hope it gets resolved and do keep us informed Thumbs Up

I am sending him a PM now.

Theoretically arson is possible but on a balance of probabilities unlikely. I know that cars do catch fire (all brands not just landys).

My reasoning behind this is because the car was ok at 14:30, a lady left my house and walked past the car at this time, she did not see any one on the lane, which is a very remote dead end lane. A farmer was attending to his sheep literally opposite the car on the other side of the lane, he heard the alarm and horn go off but did not see anyone so just thought it was another stupid car alarm. Just after this I looked out the window and saw smoke from the where the bonnet meets the window on the passenger side, (Battery fuse box area). When i went to the car it was locked and secured, the key would not operate the locks, there was no damage. The fire licked up from the corner of the bonnet by the battery and got big quick. I could smell electrical burning rubber plastic type smells.

So this would mean an arsonist would have come to a very remote muddy location, probably lost at the time, or was hiding in a bush somewhere, got past the farmer, managed not to disturb my big black lab that barks at anything that moves and then make it look like an electrical fire. I have videos.

Also my nice new caravan is sited 20M from where the car was parked, arsonists love setting fire to caravans, a far more enjoyable target.

I am unaware of anyone with a grudge against me, I am currently a house dad and help out with the village charity events whilst the kids are young, (Wife stays at work, how did that happen).

I am guessing that human error has played a part at some point be it at the dealer or a previous loan customer. If it does turn out to be more sinister I expect Land Rover will let me know, if it's a technical fault they probably won't.

Seriously Iain, you will be surprised at how many cars simply combust, we had a camera club meet at the local fire station, it was info from them. Yes, many are arson attempts but cars on supermarket car parks and at home regularly go up.

Just had a quick look and the stats show around a 1000 vehicle fires per week in the UK.

Decades ago I had just parked my car and saw a bit of smoke from the bonnet. It was caused by friction from a couple of wires which then shorted. Caught it all in time. The only real pain was a bit of smell from the smoke for a few weeks.

I also saw a car catch fire. It was parked in the street, smoke started coming out of the bonnet and within a minute the front half of the car burst into flames. In the meantime people were running from shops with fire extinguishers. 2 did not work, finally the third one did, but it was all too late.

Reminds me to get a new fire extinguisher for the new car!

A long time ago everyone in the office had some very basic fire safety training. We also had to put a fire out with a fire extinguisher. It was surprisingly difficult the first time round.

Shocked could understand it after an accident/collision, but didn't realise that so many just spontaneously combust !!
