Propshaft failure

I wonder if I am the only member of the failed propshaft club.
On a routine service check I noticed that there was grease sprayed over the underside of the heat shield above the first universal joint of the propshaft. On inspection the grease had come from the front sliding joint of the prop and I detected some play in the sliding joint. It seems that the rubberised gaiter had got a bit old and the crimped clip had failed. You cannot repair these propshafts so a new one was the only option. Having taken the prop off I also found that the rear bearing was running a bit dry.
Here is the front support bracket and you can see the "pile" of grease in a line.



I don't like grease near the exhaust pipe so here it is all cleaned up and ready to fit.



Ready to fit but probably a good idea to compare props for length!



All installed and ready to go - just need to pop the exhaust back on!



The road test was fine. I have lost a very slight clunk I had on take up and it seems smoother.

Thanks Taz - just what I needed to know!

They cannot be DIY repaired. The shafts seem to be pressed or "sweated" together and not bolted like the Freelander 1. John

That looks really useful, I am learning a lot on this forum Very Happy . How stable is it, do you ever use other supports? Some of these old nuts can be stubborn and I can see a little too much force and oh dear!

It is completely stable and has a safety locking mechanism built in. It is "portable" in as much as you can move it round the workshop but if you are really worried you can bolt it to the floor! I don't know how I managed without it! John

I use these hydraulic portable ramps as I cant get the Beemer up any fixed ramps as its been lowered.
Good for the FL2 too.
Got them off Ebay a few years ago.
Once raised the pump can be disconnected leaving a clear space underneath.

Very interesting article, the main dealer told me "the prop shaft does not disconnect from diff" they took the rear axle, prop shaft and rear drive shafts out all in 1 piece to replace tank sender unit.
Did a lot of damage in process.
Lot of firm word words!!! Good outcome at end of day. All FL2's (3) Gone

I can't believe a main dealer said that! very poor. There is a specific process for disconnecting the prop from the rear diff which involves putting bolts in from the rear of the haldex flange, but simple enough for any main dealer to be aware of it. John
