What's this threaded hole on my gearbox casing for?

Can anyone tell me what is the purpose of the threaded hole on the top of my SD4's autobox ? Im just curious, should it be plugged to keep muck out ?

Its in the centre of the pic

Don't know what it's official use is, but I used this to fix an extra earth lead from the battery on mine.
Nothing will get into the gearbox through it as it's a blind hole.
