Dead Battery.

Hi all, done a search and read a few posts but didn't quite find the info.

Just got my MY11 GS (has start\stop) back from getting its transfer box replaced and I asked the dealer to check the battery as I have had some HDC faults on startup, slow turnover at startup, no start/stop and dipping audio at high volume. They said they would check it and fully charge it for me. Called later to say the battery isn't holding its charge and needs replaced. At a cost of £350!!

I said no, mainly because I was Censored off at every sodding thing going wrong with the car, but I guess I do need to replace it. However I have never replaced a battery before so I have no clue.

I read somewhere I need an 80amp 800 something or other. If a battery has higher values is that OK? When you fit a new battery do you need to charge it? Are Halfords trustworthy for something like this?

Thanks Smile FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues
2019 DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…

Not sure on the stop/start model, but Halfords replaced my battery when I bought the car and I have had no problems, cost £110 or thereabouts. Not every Halfords is the same just like garages.

Thanks for the quick reply. I read somewhere that the start stop stuff has different requirements. May not be the case though! FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

StevieStapes of this parish had issues with his AGM battery - might be worth pm'ing him as I think he might have managed to 'recondition' to an acceptable level.

You MUST fit an AGM battery. They are more expensive than normal batteries but the start-stop equipped car requires one. I can't see from a quick look at the page whether the battery you mention is AGM. If you search around there is a lot of info on this on the forum.
Also info here: http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article...ss_mat_agm Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

Here's one that is AGM but doesn't have as high a rating

Here's an 80ah/800 AGM for about £150. AGM BATTERY. Quite a bit less expensive than your main stealer quote - you will have to self fit though which is the work of but a few minutes.

Best thing probably is to phone around / email a handful of battery suppliers to find the best priced battery that matches your existing if you can't coax a bit more life out of it.

As previous replies have said, it has to be an AGM battery (not standard lead/acid battery) due to the higher power consumption of the stop/start coupled with everything else electrical.
The changeover should be pretty straight forward, cables off, battery in/out, cables back on.
Not sure what exactly but things will need programming again. From my experience of changing battery out it will be windows, roof, stereo at the very least.
Others on here may well now if it needs any diagnostic reprogramming or not.

Only had to reset the "one touch" windows on mine Very Happy

If you are concerned you can buy a cheap memory saver on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-CAR-COMPUTER...62a0e94ca: that just plugs into the accessory socket but make sure the socket is live when the key is removed.

Just a thought but FL1's were prone to locking all of the doors when the battery was changed which can be a bit embarrassing if the keys are inside. I don't know if it's the case with FL2's but be wary of leaving the keys inside. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

Both the FL1's I had used to drop the tail door glass on battery re-connection. Both were V6 se's and both had head gasket failure in my ownership. the 1st one at 30K and the 2nd one at 68K which lead to it being replaced by the FL2.

looking at your FL2 ownership history, it looks like the earlier cars were better Question

Ian.

I had an X reg FL1 to start with 1.8 petrol. This blew the head gasket and suffered from funny tyre wear on the rear tyres and made them very noisy. The TD4 FL1s were reengineered extensively when BMW took over and also had new electrics, they fixed the rear diff ratio problem so that tyre wear was normal and I ran two TD4s (one was auto) each for about 90k miles with no problems at all. It's a pity that BMW weren't involved when the FL2 was designed as I feel we are suffering from a Ford cheap/poor design philosophy

PS my last FL1 would lock all doors on battery reconnect. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto
Now Discovery Sport P250 MHEV SE
