Amateur radio aerial mount

I know there are a couple of threads on here about amateur radio but I've not found any with photos of peoples aerial mounts. Wondering what people have done as I've always found magnetic mounts lead to swirls in the paintwork. Haven't used any lip mounts for 30 years but they used to be something you'd use on an agricultural vehicle not a car!
No roof rails on my freelander ...yet? (on my disco I had a light bar made with two flanges so I could fit aerials but originally used mirror mounts on the roof rails).

So, what have you done and ais there any chance you could upload a photo or two to show how it looks?

Thanks for the link...I swear I did search (though I told the search to exclude 'CB').

Fastening the mounts to the roof rail mount points would be an option...maybe even try and source some roof rails too!

Where I have mine makes it easy to drill/ route the cable
Middle off the roof

Not too keen on making two holes in the roof of a vehicle I'll probably only keep for a relatively short period. It is still an option so thanks for adding it to the table.

I'm out of the country at the moment so I can't slap a picture of it on here but I've cannibalized one of the K400 trunk mounts.

I've taken the bottom piece off and then use the screw that comes with it to go straight into one of the rear roof rail holes (I've not got roof rails Smile ). The cable goes along the roof rail channel, down the tailgate and in through the rear light cluster.

With a Sirio MegaWatt screwed into it I'm getting VSWR of 1.1:1 or better across the whole band.

Thanks for that. I think going into the rail mount should give by far the best groundplane. Also allows fitment of two aerials a little further apart than if I drilled the roof.

I am a radio amateur and my mobile setup is a mag mount for 2mt/70cm and a hatchback mount for hf. I have run a separate ground wire from the hatchback mount to be sure of a good ground. I found a good ground point behind the left light cluster. This setup works well for me. I have run 50 watts at 2 mt and 100 watts hf with no problems. Wink

That's along the lines of what I was thinking. Thanks for the photo.
