Wollowy Suspension

I have a new to me 2010 manual XS, that seems unbelievable twitchy steering and very wollowy to drive. If you go down a bumpy or potholed road, it will throw you about in your seat from side to side a lot, and if you go round a tight corner it feels like you're going to fall over.

My inlaws have a similar aged XS Auto, which doesn't feel anything like this while driving.

I cannot spot anything obvious wrong with the vehicle, coils etc... all look in good nick, just passed an MOT, so was wondering if anyone on here can shed some light on this? I would describe it as extremely wollowy, like the 1st Discovery's were, almost top heavy giving excessive body roll.

Thanks in advance

What tyres has the vehicle on it, what pressure/s are they at?

It seems odd as I would expect a poor ride to be wallowy or twitchy Confused

Edit: just looked, it seems walllowy and twitchy do go together Embarassed I'd be interested in the tyres, pressures and even wear to look at.

well the twitchy it probably me getting used to the "light" steering of the Freelander. Can't recall what tyres are on it atm, and it's not here as my wife is away with it.

I would have suggested struts possibly for the wallowing, but was it driving like this before the MOT?
Can you see the strut s see if they're leaking? When you push above one of the springs does the car bounce or settle after a single rebound?

Also, does this seem to be worse under braking / acceleration / steady progress?

any condition really. It was MOT'd when when bought it, so not driven it before it was MOT'd.

I'll check the rebound on the suspension when it's back, I feel as if one (or possibly more) of the struts are Censored .

It would be my best guess, let us know what you find. At least if it is the strut it's nothing major and that would be good news. When swmbo comes back with it check for tell tale signs of leaking struts as well as the highly technical bounce test Smile

Right, suspension all seams to check out! I took it for a good spin around our windy lanes, and I think it is more to do with the steering, you can rock the steering wheel side to side whilst driving along without it turning the wheels, and if you do turn it snatches back straight pretty quick, it just feels so light, perhaps it's to do with the semi off road cheap tyres it's fitted with?

They are Ranger 65's on the front and Matador Hectorra 4x4's on the rear, all of the 108 V rating extra load.

Any more suggestions?

a mixture of tyres is never a good thing.

I would prefer them all to be the same, and good quality all set at the correct pressures.

I had some Bravus (??) M+S tyres on 3 of my corners, and the dealer stuck a budget road tyre on the nearside front due to uneven wear I noticed on test.

It was wallowy on the road too, so I was contually checking my pressures to find one was leaking slowly (possibly a poor seal on the rim)

Changed all 4 tyres and had the tracking checked, with no adjustment, and it feels a lot more planted and stable.

Cheap tyres just arent worth it on a car weighing as much as a FL2 and the large sideways forces being placed on the sidewalls of the tyres.

What tyres would you recommend that won't break the bank, mainly road use, but will go off road occasionally towing and whilst pheasant shooting, wife tracking across fields to see me at work etc...

When I bought at 14 months old and 11k I ran it to 15k on original Goodyear 235/65x17, car drove well.
Xmas treat: 4 new Evoque (100 miles only) wheels with 235/60x18 Pirelli Scorpion Verde. Car was much tighter, more positive and much quieter for road noise. No noticeable difference on bad surface with the slightly lower profile.
Overall result very positive. All FL2's (3) Gone
2011 Mercedes C180 CGI Gone
FL2 GS Auto SD with heated leather, factory tints, alloy spare and a few other bits.

Have a look on the wheels and tyres thread, lots of comments and opinions on there.

I have General Grabber AT 235/65/17 on mine, mainly because Ive had the older AT2 on previous LR1 and found them to be hard wearing, long lasting and a good grip all year round. Plus the AT look nice and chunky. I paid £450 for mine all round fitted.

Its down to personal tastes and requirements really.
