Supermarket Diesel quality

Just got my 2011 TD4 GS which is also my first diesel engine ever.

I've already been shocked at the low MPG which i expected to be much better but see others getting around my initial figure of 35-38 mpg.

However i see other posts concerning quality and bio fuel content of supermarket fuel, which I see from the FL handbook mustn't exceed certain levels.

Can others let me know what is considered the best place to buy diesel, forgetting any major price differential, and what if any diesel to avoid which might affect the FL2 engine.

Shell V power or BP Ultimate are the best for your diesel.

avoid any supermarket fuel.

have a read through the relevant posts to see why.

I filled up with shell V , 1/4 tank of shell regular left , tbh my mpg is worse with shell V. I'm going to fill up again with shell V to give it a proper trial. Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

I hadn't really given the issue a thought as always used supermarket unleaded petrol and assumed diesel was diesel. !!!

The first week I had the car I only got 30mpg poodling round town. That shocked me enough to go on a gentle country drive when I drove it like my granddad and got 42mpg. This is not the way I like to drive.

The bio content thing is an issue I hadn't thought of.. do the retailers have published content figures?

England 

All UK fuels are within the same specifications, the only differences are the additives added by the driver of the tanker, which will be 1 in X thousand. The FL2 is able to take a higher concentration of bio fuel than most models but that is not relevant to UK brands. I always use supermarket fuel normally Waitrose Laughing and my OH has no idea of economical driving, so anywhere in the late 20's early 30's is reasonable. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Indus Silver

I have used only shell V power Diesel since I got the new car
it is returning 36-37Mpg driven normally.
(As the Trip"b" has never been reset from Factory
I also get a consumption figure after 8500Miles which is around 27-29MPG)
rural-motorway etc
I am happy with this figure
the extra cost per Tank is not worth worrying about.
Only issue I have is local garages do not stock it, so I have to Fill up when I pass one that does.

Ive given up on Supermarket fuel because of poor MPG. I now use either Jet (which I find best), or shell and each tank I add the two stroke dose.
Mine is 2010 pre facelift and regular gives 34 around town and up to 40 on a decent run of flattish motorways. 29 / 29 Towing a caravan, (don't tell George).

I'm very happy using a two ton brick with autobox with those figures.

Don't worry about 'bio', the FL2 is fine within the UK, I fill up whenever/wherever its needed, BP is local to me so use it because its there and I don't give a fig about economy Very Happy

Ah so .. thanks guys.
As always it seems a personal decision. I was suddenly concerned about damaging the engine but that doesn't seem to be the issue here... unless anyone knows otherwise ??

Incidentally, I have only done a few hundred miles so far.. i really don't know what happened the first week but I filled right up and checked the litres used when i refilled again as a quick test.. and find the average mpg reading on the car to be spot on, comparing with a litres per gallon calculation.

I have always put either Asda, Tesco or Morrisons fuel in all my cars (only the VERY occasional fill up at a proper garage)

My economy has always been reasonable/as expected and in my current FL2 im getting average of 36/37/38 mpg which is mostly on the A1, country and few town roads. If i pushed it to empty I would be looking at around 500+ miles to a tank taking into account range figure + odometer figure.

Im happy with those figures.

The supermarket fuel is so much cheaper than mainstream garages as they are allowed to offset the store profits against fuel and vice versa, which means they can sell fuel cheap and transfer profits from the store takings.

As has been said, the fuel in UK is manufactured to a minimum standard which is well above what the FL2 engine can cope with.

IMO variances in MPG figures that people are seeing is mostly likely to be diffences in air temperature, differences in tyre pressures and other such factors.

Supermarket Fuel yes, it meets the EN requirements as opposed to branded which exceeds it, it's basic fuel with none of the additives.
Would be interesting if we could find a Frrelander that has spent all its life using Supemarket fuel against one that has been using Shell Nitro or BP Ultimate, wonder if we would see the coking up of the Throttle Box, Glow Plugs carbonised in place, just a thought. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

Ok .. like i said this is my first diesel engine. Its got 55000 on it and i don't know its history save having LR dealer services on spec.
So my annual mileage will be around 6000, with quite a bit of local town driving. I am aware that the engine should be taken on a good 20 min run to clean out the filter, which is not a problem.

I remember the good ol days of Redex and the like to allegedly prevent valve stems sticking and such arguments. So on my typical driving, should I be adding any additives or just go for Premium diesel to prevent any harmful residues.. or does a good 90mph motorway run do it anyway.

I use premium diesel, I get marginally better consumption figures, the engine is more responsive too. The cost doesn't bother me and isn't an issue.

Have a read at the 2so thread, might be worth a try?
